Why He's Person of the Week: For refusing to back down in the face of enormous pressure by both Democrats and fair-weather Republicans to resign or be dismissed in lieu of doing nothing wrong regarding the firings of 8 federal attorney's. As Gonzales noted during yesterday's testimony before the Senate, all the attorney's had served their full four-year term, and were continuing to serve at the pleasure of the President -- and that pleasure was withdrawn, as is fully legal and proper.

And even when confronted by a fresh call for his resignation from a fellow Republican ("The best way to put this behind us is your resignation," Sen. Tom Coburn bluntly told Gonzales), Gonzales told Coburn that he didn't think resigning would put the controversy to rest. Of course, Gonzales was wrong on this count because resigning was exactly what Democrats wanted to be the result of their well-designed witch-hunt against Gonzales in the first place. But Gonzales stood his ground and President Bush's total support for him since the beginning of this non-scandal showed you that Bush wasn't about to let liberal minions like Chuck Schumer (who undoubtedly never brought up the fact that Bill Clinton fired 93 U.S. attorney's during his term during yesterday's testimony) bring down a trusted member of his inner circle.

"The moment I believe I can no longer be effective I will resign as attorney general," Gonzales said after first making it clear he did not believe it had come to that.

Hillary's Approval Ratings Are Plummeting

And finally some good news:

Presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton’s approval rating has plummeted, and a majority of Americans now have an unfavorable view of her, a new Gallup poll disclosed.

As recently as February, Clinton had a favorable rating of 58 percent. But in the new poll completed April 15, her favorable rating stood at just 45 percent, while 52 percent of respondents said they have an unfavorable view of Clinton.

"The recent decline in her image appears to be broad-based, as it is evident among most key subgroups,” Gallup noted.

Democratic rivals Barack Obama and John Edwards both had favorable ratings of 52 percent and unfavorable ratings of only 30 percent, according to the poll results reported in Editor & Publisher.

No matter what happens Hillary shouldn't worry too much as hubby Bill is still rakin' in the dough like he never has before.

"The Worst Shooting Incident In U.S. History"

(CNN) -- A gunman who killed at least 30 people in one of two shootings on the campus of Virginia Tech was dressed "almost like a Boy Scout," said a student who survived by pretending to lie dead on a classroom floor.

"He just stepped within five feet of the door and just started firing," said Erin Sheehan, who was in one of the Norris Hall classrooms where the second shooting incident took place.

Sheehan described the gunman -- who later shot and killed himself, according to police -- as a young man wearing a short-sleeved tan shirt and black ammunition vest.

"He seemed very thorough about it -- getting almost everyone down -- I pretended to be dead," she said. (Watch student describe surviving by playing dead )

"He was very silent," said Sheehan, one of only four students in her 25-student German class who were not shot.

The gunman left but returned in about 30 seconds. "I guess he heard us still talking," said Sheehan.

"We forced ourselves against the door so he couldn't come in again, because the door would not lock."

Listen, I already know which way the debate on this is heading in the blogosphere: the cons will tell us again and again that "guns don't kill, people do", while the libs will scream for more gun control. Personally, I lean on the side if the libs on this one as it seems to me that the "well regulated" part of the Second Amendment always gets ignored or pushed aside by the gun advocates and in their "right to bear arms" campaign. Yet, no matter what side of the aisle you're on regarding guns, it's my feeling that our thoughts and prayers should first be with the families who lost loved ones in this heinous act of violence. Because while we may debate this for a few days, they're the ones who will have to live with this forever.
