Yahoo News' Washington bureau chief was fired Wednesday after he was
caught on a hot mic joking that Republicans are "happy to have a party"
while black people drown.
The comment was made by David Chalian during live coverage of the
Republican National Convention in Tampa, and was an apparent reference
to the convention getting underway while a tropical
storm-turned-hurricane barreled toward the Gulf Coast.
"They are happy to have a party with black people drowning," said a
voice off-camera, later identified as Chalian, as video of the Romneys
played on screen. Other people could be heard laughing at the comment.
A Yahoo! spokesperson confirmed to FoxNews.com that Chalian was let
go, and said the company has apologized to Romney and his staff.
"David Chalian's statement was inappropriate and does not represent
the views of Yahoo!. He has been terminated effective immediately. We
have already reached out to the Romney campaign, and we apologize to
Mitt Romney, his staff, their supporters and anyone who was offended,"
the spokesperson said in a statement.
Chalian posted his own apology later Wednedsay on Twitter: "I am
profoundly sorry for making an inappropriate and thoughtless joke."
Chalian used to work for ABC before moving on to serve as the
political director at "PBS NewsHour" and eventually work for Yahoo
News.
Despicable. It isn't enough for the Obama minions in the press to bully conservative guests, they have to be rude and talk down to them as well. To think, Liz Cheney's on there facing off against 4 Obama stans (including former Clinton aide George Stephanopoulos and notorious Obama groupie Gwen Ifill) and she's barely allowed to get her points across. Sam Donaldson is a jerk.
Gwen Ifill, the PBS news host who was allowed to moderate a vice-presidential debate between Sarah Palin and Joe Biden despite a clear conflict of interest in which she has a book deal in the works that harps praise on Barack Obama, is now wondering aloud why we can't just ignore the Constitution and allow Barack to be president now:
In the midst of a discussion about President-elect Barack Obama's national security team, Washington Week host Gwen Ifill on Friday night's program sought confirmation for her theory that “what people are beginning to say is that this President-elect should be President now” as “people are saying why isn't Barack Obama leading the fight about the auto-makers?”
New York Times reporter Peter Baker agreed: “That's right, exactly.” He proceeded to fret over how “people voted for change and this strange, odd 77-day waiting period that we impose...between our election and our inauguration” just isn't compatible with the “hyperactive 24/7 fast-moving culture that we have today.” Baker admired how “Obama is trying to find some balance between respecting President Bush,” whom Baker conceded is “still in charge,” and “finding a way to assert leadership.”
Indeed, despite a Democrat just winning a presidential election by a landslide, liberals can't enjoy themselves for a couple of months without continuing to take potshots at President Bush, a man who has been nothing but gracious and cooperative to the President-elect. It's just the way they are.
