1 Year Later: Media Link Climate Change, Hurricane Sandy Every Single Time

During the 2008 banking crisis, then-Obama Chief of Staff Rahm Emmanuel famously said, “Never allow a crisis to go to waste.” The broadcast networks certainly followed his advice when reporting on Hurricane Sandy since the storm became a hurricane one year ago, hitting the New Jersey coast on Oct. 29. 

Network reporters and experts have repeatedly claimed that the storm was either caused or worsened because of climate change. In fact, 100 percent of the 32 news stories and briefs in the past year that mentioned climate change and Hurricane Sandy claimed global warming directly impacted the storm – even though “no single weather event can be linked directly to a long-term driver, such as global warming,” according to climate change activists. 

ABC, CBS and NBC spun the issue even more. Only 6 percent of the stories (2 out of 32 stories) provided another view. No story actually quoted an expert who disagreed. The closest the networks came to providing a “balanced” news story was saying that “whether climate change is to blame for it [Sandy] is the subject of debate,” on the CBS “Evening News,” May 28. In another story, NBC listed climate change as a possible cause: “Blame it on a freak storm, climate change, or both,” said “Today,” on Nov. 3, 2012. 

The stories were predictably one-sided. From “Today” interviewing Al Gore to journalists quoting politicians like liberal New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, there was little room for debate on the issue. 

Other reports claimed “extreme weather” events like Sandy were becoming more common. The idea that weather is more extreme and varied than any point in history was also uncontested and considered a fact by the networks. On July 4, 2013, “This Morning,” CBS congressional correspondent Nancy Cordes made that case in a conversation with global warming activist and meteorologist Michio Kaku. “As one scientist told us, its not just like global warming, it’s almost like global weirding. All the weather is more extreme,” she argued. 

On CBS “This Morning,” Jan. 26, Time senior writer and global warming alarmist, Jeffrey Kluger even had the audacity to call climate change skeptics, “flat earthers” and like “the people who say the moon landings never happened,”
“The latest peer-reviewed studies, data and analyses undermine claims that the weather is more ‘extreme’ or ‘unprecedented,’” according to Marc Morano, publisher of Climate Depot. “They are exploiting any weather event to promote their religious like cause and a storm like Sandy is shamelessly used to gin up fear,” he added. 

Experts Say Weather Patterns Are Normal and ‘There Is No Trend In Hurricanes’There are experts who disagree that weather is more extreme than normal and that man is causing extreme weather events. 

Meteorologist Joe Bastardi told Forbes in May that “blaming turbulent weather on global warming is extreme nonsense” and that the current climate changes are part of a normal weather cycle. 

For example, the chart used by global warming alarmists like Al Gore in “An Inconvenient Truth” that supposedly shows a period of global warming have long been debunked for faulty methodology.

Bastardi went on to explain: 

“First of all, we need to keep in mind that ‘climate’ occurs over at least three-decade periods and on a large scale … Right now we’re seeing the same kind of major events on a regional scale that occurred the last time the Pacific Ocean shifted its temperature phase from warm to cold when the Atlantic was in a warm phase, and globally, the Earth’s temps have fallen about .05C in the last four years.” 

Not all scientists agree that Sandy was anything other than a natural disaster either.
Climatologist Dr. John Christy of the University of Alabama Huntsville, took that view. 

“Hurricane Sandy was a minimal hurricane. So, it is in no way indicative of arising trends in hurricanes that might be attributed to global warming.” In addition, Colorado State University researchers William Gray and Phil Klotzbach told National Geographic that human activity on the formation and intensity of Atlantic hurricanes “is likely to be negligible.” 

While all three networks frequently interviewed or cited global warming activists, not one had a scientist presenting a different viewpoint in the stories linking Sandy to climate change since the storm, even though such scientists clearly exist. 

Media Use Sandy Crisis to Promote Climate Change Activism 

Not only did the news provide unbalanced coverage, journalists actively championed the cause of global warming, and used Sandy as an example for why climate change “is real” and why we need to “act” sooner than later. 

On CBS “This Morning” on Nov. 1, anchor Charlie Rose asked global warming activist and Time editor Bryan Walsh about the storm and its “big lessons.” Walsh responded, “Well, I think there’s – there’s a few. One is that climate change clearly is real. I mean scientists will differ on exactly how much climate change contributes to a storm like this. But what we know is that this will become more and more common in the future that we’ll have stronger storms.” 

If reporters didn’t sensationalize, they scolded for not “acting” on the climate. On ABC “World News” Jan. 8, correspondent Dan Harris warned of a future following inaction saying, “Many cities had record warmth, including Washington D.C., where a lack of action on manmade climate change is likely to mean 2012 is just a glimpse into an unpleasant future, according to many scientists.” 

The “Green is Universal” network, NBC, was the most outspoken on the issue and sounded more like activists than journalists. On “Today,” April 3, weather anchor Al Roker was incredulous at an NBC poll that showed 37 percent of people did not believe in global warming. Roker said, “But 37 percent said – 37 percent of these people don’t believe in global warming. They think it’s a hoax. I mean – that, uh, okay, two words – Superstorm Sandy.” 

Roker found a way to bring in climate change to Hurricane Sandy again on Sept. 24 when interviewing Vice President Joe Biden about government aid through FEMA. 

“You guys have been going to these – it seems like with a pretty regular, you know, in the last 18 months, Sandy, Moore, Okla., you name it, Isaac, Irene, now this. Are we looking at the new normal?” Biden replied, “We can’t attribute any one thing to global warming – but there is – there are all of these weather events seem more severe and more pervasive.”

Was Hurricane Sandy God's Wrath For New York Passing Gay Marriage?

Of course, anti-God liberals are blaming faux-global warming for Hurricane Sandy. But considering that global warming has been disproven over and over and over again (along with the fact that most social liberals are atheists) and New York recently sanctioning unGodly "same-sex" marriage, it's a wholehearted question to wonder if the two might be related:

Pastor Luke Robinson of the Quinn Chapel AME Church in Frederick, Md., told a crowd of gay marriage opponents that Hurricane Sandy struck and devastated parts of New York City last week as part of God’s judgment for the city’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg making a monetary donation to the campaign to defend Maryland’s law allowing same-sex marriages.

“Here was the mayor of New York giving a quarter of a million dollars, coming down to Maryland discussing the matter,” said Robinson, according to audio posted by the Washington Blade. 

“While he’s here somebody whispers in the ear, ‘You better go back home and protect your stock because God is sending judgment.’ The thing came through the area. You have to understand the season and the time.

It’s almost the end of hurricane season, but God sent one of the biggest hurricanes ever.”

The pastor was referring to Bloomberg’s October donation of $250,000 to the campaign to uphold Maryland’s new same-sex marriage law.

Robinson conceded that his own state of Maryland was badly damaged by the hurricane, but he told the crowd that they were spared the same level of New York damage: “The storm came through here, but for the glory of God the storm didn’t tear us up because we got that hope for us. There are people who are praying for us. There are people who believe in God, we [are] going to turn it around.”

CBS Reporter Jan Crawford Encourages Obama to Politicize Hurricane Sandy

On Wednesday's CBS This Morning, Jan Crawford hyped the cleanup from Hurricane Sandy as a "huge opportunity" for President Obama to display his leadership skills, as opponent Mitt Romney currently hold the advantage in that area in the latest CBS News poll of key battleground states, particularly in Florida.

Crawford also touted that Obama could " build his lead on the question of which candidate better understands people's needs and problems. Voters here [in Florida] give him the edge on empathy."
The CBS correspondent made this assertion at the end of her report on the former Massachusetts governor's "pretty low profile over the past couple of days, as he's been trying to walk this fine line between maintaining a public presence while the East Coast was getting battered by Hurricane Sandy."

Prior to Crawford's report, anchors Charlie Rose and Norah O'Donnell spotlighted how " Obama leads Governor Mitt Romney by five points in Ohio. That's the same as last week. In Virginia, the President holds a two-point lead. However, his Republican challenger has an edge with independent voters."

The CBS journalist did point out during the segment that Romney "picked up a lot of ground here" in Florida in her network's latest poll. She also noted that the Republican was "in a dead heat with the President, after trailing by nine points just over a month ago."

Later, Crawford outlined that " Romney is now edging out the President among seniors, and has cut his lead with women voter in half....Our polls shows voters here believe he will do a better job working with Democrats and Republicans. More Florida voters also say Romney has stronger leadership qualities than the President."

Bernie Goldberg: Irene Coverage Was The Product Of New York ‘Journalistic Narcissism’

The post-hurricane debate over how the mainstream media treated the threat raged on last night, as the many factors in play led to various theories on whether Irene was sufficiently covered. On last night’s O’Reilly Factor, Bernie Goldberg argued that one of the main reasons the media cared so much about Hurricane Irene was “because it was heading for the center of the universe,” and that a larger hurricane heading for a different region wouldn’t have gotten the attention– though giving the caveat that “hurricanes are dangerous things and they’re no fun to go through.”


Goldberg made the point to host Bill O’Reilly that it was not just the large size of New York that made it such a media target, but that it is where “media elite journalists live,” and that many who cover the news suffer from “journalistic narcissism.” By way of contrast, Goldberg argued that, were “a bigger hurricane heading for Biloxi, Mississippi… it just wouldn’t get the same attention.”


O’Reilly disagreed, offering an alternative explanation for the media blitz surrounding the hurricane: Katrina. Besides the fact that “it’s the end of August, nothing else is going on,” the fact that the media was caught almost as flat-footed as the government by Hurricane Katrina left them hyper-sensitive to the potential of another nightmare scenario. While Goldberg didn’t back down on his claim that the New York factor contributed majorly to the coverage, he agreed that “in the post-Katrina age, nobody’s taking chances anymore,” nor are political leaders “going to get caught on the wrong side of the hurricane.”

Liberal Media Overhyped Hurricane Irene To Push Global Warming Hoax

Bottom line, when it comes to the mainstream media every utterance of a word has a code behind it:

In the days leading up to Hurricane Irene's march through the Northeast, journalists repeatedly suggested that the storm was yet more evidence of climate change.


"The scale of Hurricane Irene, which could cause more extensive damage along the Eastern Seaboard than any storm in decades, is reviving an old question: are hurricanes getting worse because of human-induced climate change?" asked the New York Times' Justin Gillis in his August 28 piece.


HLN guest host Don Lemon asked scientist Bill Nye on Wednesday if the storm was proof of climate change. Nye answered that it was "consistent with all the predictions of climate change models" and added that the United States is behind the times in taking action on climate change. "There's no other developed world country that isn't very concerned about climate change," Nye asserted, and ABC's weatherman Sam Champion agreed.


MSNBC's guest host Chris Hayes teed up environmental activist Bill McKibben with this dour question on Thursday: "How do you maintain hope? Because sometimes I read about the climate, and I just sort of despair, or I want to throw in the towel." McKibben predictably answered that the hurricane's middle name was "global warming."


On Friday's Dylan Ratigan Show, as NewsBusters reported, MSNBC contributor Toure asked Stephen Flynn from the Center for National Policy if such a "massive storm" in New York City would be evidence of global warming. Flynn answered in the affirmative.

Perhaps using a preemptive strike to help combat the May jobs report to be released on Friday, MSNBC has already found an excuse for lost jobs, and an increased unemployment rate – storms, tornadoes and flooding. According to a business report:


“…homes or places of business have been destroyed in this year's wave of storms, tornadoes and flooding. That means thousands of workers in the South and Midwest could be out of work for some time, potentially pushing up the nation's jobless rate and further taxing financially strapped state unemployment funds.”


Yet in 2004, when reporting on an October jobs report in which hiring had increased at the fastest pace in seven months, MSNBC somehow managed to find analysts who said the jump in hiring was due mainly to another form of natural disaster – hurricanes. The business report at that time read:


“Some analysts were skeptical about the latest surge of hiring, pointing out that much of the unusually large jump in October stemmed from cleanup and rebuilding in Florida and other states that were ravaged by four hurricanes…”


That assessment is buoyed by an accompanying CNBC video (seen below) in which Senior Economics Reporter, Steve Liesman, asks President Bush’s economic advisor, Gregory Mankiw, about the ‘Hurricane Effect’ on a jobs report.


Liesman: The concern here is that there was a lot of hurricane related with bounce back from September and a lot of construction related activity that added to jobs in October. Greg, take a step back from the number, the 339,000, where is the trend as far as you can tell?


Considering the devastation and destruction wrought by the recent spate of tornadoes, would there not be an uptick in construction related activity as well?


MSNBC followed that report with another forecast on job growth in November of 2004, which anticipated glowing numbers due to a ‘post-hurricane rebound’. That report read:


“Economists, who have been burned over the past few months by reports that fell short of expectations, are once again looking for a solid report, partly because of an expected rebound after four hurricanes tore through Florida and other southern states in August and September.”


That said, the biggest contradiction to the aforementioned ‘tornadoes wipe out jobs’ report may have come from an AP article run on the MSNBC site itself just four days ago. The headline?


Natural disasters probably won't bruise US economy


That piece stated:


The tornadoes and floods that have devastated parts of the South and Midwest have also hammered the local economies — flooding farmlands, suspending factory work and disrupting energy production.


Yet for the U.S. economy overall, the damage will likely be scant. At most, the disasters might knock one-tenth of 1 percentage point off national economic growth in the April-June quarter, Wells Fargo economist Mark Vitner estimates.


"It's so small, you aren't going to notice it," said Patrick Newport, an economist at IHS Global Insight.


Also of interest is the next sentence which reads:


Others caution, though, that the tornado season hasn't ended yet, and the hurricane season has yet to arrive. Further major disasters could begin to weigh on the U.S. economy.


So in the view of MSNBC, hurricanes and natural disasters in 2004 actually helped to create jobs, while in 2011 they will likely eliminate jobs. What’s the biggest difference leading to two very contradicting conclusions in these jobs reports?


Who was running for re-election in October of 2004, and who is running for re-election now?

Obama Continues To Ignore Texas Wildfires

Over two million acres have been burned in Texas in wildfires that stretch from “border to border.” Two firefighters have already died. The effort to get the fires under control threatens to overwhelm the state, but the Obama administration has thus far refused to declare Texas a federal disaster, a declaration that would allow more resources to flow into the state to fight the fires. How urgent is this for Texans? Rep. Francisco Canseco (R-TX) put together a video demanding action, and Governor Rick Perry tweeted it out last night with this message to his followers : “Welcome Obama to Texas. Up the pressure on denied disaster relief.”


Critics might be tempted to point out that Texans like their 10th-Amendment independence, but Texans also fork over a lot of tax revenue that funds federal disaster relief, too. With over 2.2 million acres destroyed already — which equates to over 3400 square miles, or roughly seven times the size of Los Angeles, 50 times the size of DC, and three times the land area of Rhode Island — a federal declaration of disaster seems warranted, and the real question is why Barack Obama hasn’t acted.

The Blue-state President refuses to answer the call, but then his base has always had no problem reminding us that anyone living in a southern red state aren't real Americans.

Obama Ignores Texas Wildfires

Hey, now why would anyone expect the most liberal President ever to care about a conservative, historically Republican state like Texas:

Republican Gov. Rick Perry accused President Obama of neglecting Texas Thursday when he slammed the administration for failing to declare a disaster in the wildfire-damaged state.


"You see hundreds of thousands of acres of Texas burning and you know that there will soon be emergency declarations, and we did that now a couple of weeks ago, but still no response from this administration," he told local news radio station WOAI in an interview.


Perry requested a federal declaration for emergency in Texas on April 16 after destruction from wildfires reached 252 counties in the state. An emergency declaration from the president would clear the path for federal aid to Texas.


Obama approved GOP Gov. Robert Bentley's request for emergency federal assistance in Alabama on Wednesday, the same day it was requested, after a wave of tornados ripped through the state. According to FEMA, emergency declarations are made when "an incident is of such severity and magnitude that effective response is beyond state and local capabilities and that federal assistance is necessary."


Obama visited Tuscaloosa, Alabama Friday, touring damaged regions of the city. He pledged the federal government would "do everything we can to help these communities rebuild."


"I've never seen devastation like this," the president said.


But Perry aired his frustration over what he perceives as a lack of needed attention to Texas, venting, "They watch TV, they know what's going on here, they can recognize that there is going to be a request for assistance, a request for help."


Perry protested what he views as a lack of response from President Obama 13 days after his request for emergency funds, though federal agencies such as the National Park Service have supplied firefighters to support the state.


"There is a point in time where you say, hey, what's going on here. You have to ask why are you taking care of Alabama and other states? I know our letter didn't get lost in the mail."
