‘Fast and Furious’ Guns Still Showing Up at Murder Scenes in Mexico

A CNN report broadcast on Tuesday revealed that gun released to Mexican gangs as part of the Fast and Furious “gun-walking” operation are continuing to show up at scenes of violence sound of the American border. According to the CNN report, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives acknowledged that more weapons released into Mexico are likely to continue surfacing in the coming years.


The latest Fast and Furious weapon to be acquired by authorities was used in a December 18 shootout in Puerto Penasco, Mexico. 

CNN acquired video of the shootout, posted to YouTube, which featured audio of the violent gun battle between Mexican gangs and authorities. Five people were killed in the shootout, including a “senior member” of a Mexican drug cartel, CNN’s Evan Perez reported.

“The ATF has accepted responsibility for the mistakes made in the Fast and Furious investigation,” an ATF statement obtained by CNN read, “and, at the Attorney General’s direction, we have taken appropriate and decisive action to ensure that these errors will not be repeated.”

“And we acknowledge that, regrettably, firearms related to Fast and Furious investigation will likely continue to be recovered at future crime scenes,” the statement concluded.

Ann Coulter joined Sean Hannity Monday night to talk about liberal media hypocrisy in the politics of mass shooters. Coulter echoed sentiments made by Rush Limbaugh that most school shooters are “inspired” by leftism, and even went so far as to say “liberalism is on the spectrum of mental illness.”

They were reacting to The Denver Post stealth-editing the word “socialist” the word “socialist” out of a profile for the Arapahoe shooter, saying this never would have happened if he was right-wing. Coulter said it’s always “crazy people” involved and on the left in particular, because “the left has a 200-year history of engaging in violence.”

They were both quick to say that they don’t want to blame the left for individual school shootings like they believe liberals do to conservative-affiliated shooters.

There's been another mass shooting by a crazy person, and liberals still refuse to consider institutionalizing the dangerous mentally ill. 

The man who shot up the Washington Navy Yard on Monday, Aaron Alexis, heard voices speaking to him through the walls. He thought people were following him. He believed microwave ovens were sending vibrations through his body. There are also reports that Alexis believed the Obamacare exchanges were ready to go. 

Anyone see any bright red flags of paranoid schizophrenia? (Either that, or Obama's NSA is way better than we thought!) 

But Alexis couldn't be institutionalized because the left has officially certified the mentally ill as "victims," and once you're a victim, all that matters is that you not be "stigmatized." 

But here's the problem: Coddling the mentally ill isn't even helping the mentally ill. Ask the sisters of crazy homeless woman "Billie Boggs" how grateful they were to the ACLU for keeping Boggs living on the streets of New York City. Ask the parents of Aaron Alexis, James Holmes (Aurora, Colo., movie theater shooter), Jared Loughner (Tucson, Ariz., mall shooter) or Seung-Hui Cho (Virginia Tech shooter) how happy they are that their sons weren't institutionalized. 

Tellingly, throughout the last three decades, the overall homicide rate has been in free fall, thanks to Republican crime policies, from 10 per 100,000 in 1980 to 4 per 100,00 today. (You might even call them "common sense" crime policies.) But the number of mass shootings has skyrocketed from 4 per year, between 1900 and 1970, to 29 per year since then. 

Something seems to have gone horribly wrong right around 1970. What could it be? Was it the introduction of bell-bottoms? 

That date happens to correlate precisely with when the country began throwing the mentally ill out of institutions in 1969. Your memory of there not being as many mass murders a few decades ago is correct. 

Your memory of there not being as many homeless people a few decades ago is also correct. 

But liberals won't allow the dangerous mentally ill to be committed to institutions against their will. (The threat of commitment is very persuasive in getting disturbed individuals to take their medicine.) Something in liberals' genetic makeup compels them to attack civilization, for example, by defending the right of dangerous psychotics to refuse treatment and then representing them in court after they commit murder.

13 Wounded as Gunmen Open Fire in Chicago Basketball Court

What folks in New York City can look forward to if they elect, soft-on-crime, anti stop-and-frisk, uber-liberal Bill de Blasio as mayor come november:

Thirteen people, including a 3-year-old boy, were hit by gunshots Thursday night as at least two gunmen opened fire on a group of people who had gathered at a basketball court on Chicago’s South Side, the police said. 

There were no fatalities, but the child was shot in the head and two other people were also hospitalized in critical condition on Friday, the authorities said. The police have not made any arrests in the shooting. 

The shooting is the latest outburst of violence in the city, which had more than 500 homicides in 2012 — more than any other city in the nation, and about 80 more than New York, which has twice as many people. 

At about 10:15 p.m. Thursday night, at least two men shot at a group people at a basketball game at Cornell Square Park in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, the police said, sending players and spectators scrambling for cover as dozens of bullets were fired at the court. 

The victims ranged in age from 3 to 41, according to the Fire Department. Two of the wounded were teenagers. 

Family members identified the young boy as Deonta Howard, whose uncle was shot and killed on Sept. 2, according to The Chicago Tribune. 

Ron Gaines, a police spokesman, said the shooting appeared to be gang related. The city has sought to combat such violence in recent months by deploying hundreds of officers on overtime to 20 neighborhoods plagued by shootings and by focusing on reducing the city’s endemic gang warfare, particularly retaliatory shootings. Chicago police say the murder rate is about 20 percent lower this year when compared with 2012. 

In an incident that has come to illustrate the city’s problem with violence, Hadiya Pendleton, a 15-year-old member of her high school’s majorette team, was gunned down in January, not long after she had returned from Washington after performing at an event celebrating the second inauguration of President Obama. 

That shooting, which occurred not far from Mr. Obama’s family home, was mentioned by the president in his State of the Union speech this year.

During CNN's live coverage of Monday's shooting at the Washington Navy Yard, anchor Carol Costello asked when the last time was that a gunman wreaked "havoc at a U.S. military facility." In 2009, a jihadist killed 13 in a mass-shooting at Fort Hood in Texas. 

"I used to work in Washington, live in Washington. This seems so unusual to me that a gunman could create this kind of havoc at a U.S. military facility," Costello stated. "Have you ever heard of it happening before, Brian?" she asked correspondent Brian Todd, reporting live from the vicinity of the shooting.

Costello added that "this is so unusual, because this is such a heavily-secured military facility. I've worked in Washington for many years, I've never heard of such a thing happening." She may have been referring to shootings at military bases near Washington, D.C., though her question simply referred to a "U.S. military facility."

Rush Limbaugh Rips Lack Of Coverage Of Chris Dorner’s ‘Left-Wing Ties’: ‘The Fact That He’s Black Is A Factor’

As the manhunt for murder suspect and ex-LAPD officer Chris Dorner continues, Rush Limbaugh weighed on the issue on Monday. Hitting those who have asserted that Dorner makes some valid points in his manifesto, Limbaugh noted that race is a factor.

“Despite the murders,” Limbaugh noted, some (like Steve Roberts, whom he named) have insisted there’s “intelligence…at work here, and there is racism in the LAPD…this guy’s got historical sensibility.”

“Look, the fact that he’s black is a factor here,” Limbaugh asserted bluntly. “I’m sorry, but what else would explain this? What else would excusing this — or, if not excusing it, relegating the murder aspect of what the guy’s doing to secondary status, and that the primary thing we must see is his intellect.”

He then went on to point to the New Yorker‘s Ryan Lizza noting during a TV appearance with Howard Kurtz that there’s “a kernel of truth” to the criticism. “Sometimes the media does have a hair trigger when you find out a murder suspect does have ties to, say, the Tea Party or some radical right group,” he said. “So I can understand why there’s some sensitivity on the right to this.”

“The hypocrisy is the least of it,” Limbaugh remarked. They simply don’t see that they’re ignoring Dorner’s “left-wing ties” — even though Dorner “wants the approval of liberals!” A direct tie is simply being ignored, he continued.

With that, he went on to hit Charlie Sheen for the message he sent to Dorner via TMZ (after Sheen saw that he was mentioned in Dorner’s manifesto). Going past Sheen’s publicity grab, Limbaugh added that, to some, he’s fighting a race war. That’s what makes him “an acclaimed hero to people.”

When Crazed Shooters Can’t Be Linked To The Tea Party, Liberal Media Displays Admirable Restraint

Alleged Los Angeles shooter Christopher Jordan Dorner, influenced by left-leaning media coverage of gun crime in the wake of the Newtown shootings, has virtually paralyzed the City of Angels. Floyd Lee Corkins, a gunman incensed by anti-gay marriage bias after reading articles by the liberal advocacy group Southern Poverty Law Center, took a firearm into the Family Research Council’s headquarters with the intention of killing “as many as possible.” He hoped to smash Chick-fil-A sandwiches in the faces of as many corpses as he could. These shooters were clearly moved by left-wing media, and we should thank every benevolent force in the universe that they were. Had either shooter possessed even a tenuous link to a conservative group, a media-driven hysteria about the malevolent influence of right-wing broadcasters and commentators would be gripping the nation today. Fortunately, when a crazed shooter’s ideology is explicitly and demonstrably left-wing, the media displays admirable restraint about linking a gunman’s politics to their acts of violence.


The instinct by many high profile voices in the media to link violence to right-wing politics is not a new phenomenon, but it has enjoyed a renaissance since the tea party began to achieve political power. The broadcasters who subtly implicated former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin in the 2011 attack on a Democratic congresswoman in Tucson, Arizona, is indicative of this bias. CNN host Piers Morgan exemplifies the lamentable instinct to blame conservatism for senseless violence well. 

In a November, 2011, interview with Mark Kelly, Morgan said he was shocked by the “extraordinary” fact that Palin did not reach out to former Rep. Gabby Giffords (D-AZ) immediately after the shooting. Kelly agreed, saying that the infamous map on Palin’s website which featured targets over a variety of congressional districts that Republicans were “targeting” in that year’s midterm elections – an infraction which sparked a national uproar about the martial imagery employed by politicians since the time of Demosthenes – was “not the right thing to do.”

The implication was clear: Palin had some influence on the crazed gunman who shot up an impromptu meeting of a Congresswoman and her constituents. Palin’s crosshairs map had become a scapegoat for prominent voices from Paul Krugman to Randi Zuckerberg. It did not take much investigation into Loughner’s background to learn that he was not especially political, and was certainly not a fan of Palin’s. Nevertheless, nearly a year after this tragic incident, Morgan clung to that baseless charge.

Since the Newtown shooting, Morgan has been beating the drum about the need for stricter gun laws. His pro-gun control crusade made a deep impression on Dorner, who praised Morgan in his manifesto. So, having been specifically cited as someone who influenced Dorner, Morgan would engage in some introspection. Instead, he dismissed his influence on the L.A. shooter outright. 

Morgan tweeted confidently — just hours after the manifesto in which Dorner praised not just Morgan but MSNBC’s programming and a proposed Assault Weapons Ban – that politics has “nothing to do” with Dorner’s rampage.

Unfortunately, the spectacularly wrong-headed approach the media took to assigning nonexistent motives to Loughner did not lead the media to impose some restraint on itself when opining on the politics of crazed shooters. 

After Aurora, Colorado, shooter James Holmes attacked moviegoers this summer, ABC News reporter Brian Ross – minutes after the name of the suspect had been leaked to the press – sifted through the white pages to discover that there was one James Holmes in Colorado who happened to be a tea party activist. That incident forced ABC’s President Ben Sherwood to issue an apology.

In February, 2010, when the deranged Joseph Stack flew his Piper Cub into the headquarters of the Internal Revenue Service in Austin, Texas, few in the elite media waited for the dust to settle before blaming conservatism. “The First Tea Party Terrorist?” asked New York Times columnist Robert Wright. 

Even though Wright had Stack’s online manifesto in hand – one in which he praises Marxist communism and laments the harsh excesses of American capitalism – Wright used a magicians sleight of hand to nevertheless link Stack to the tea party.

Was he a Tea Partier — or at least a Tea Party sympathizer? Conservatives who say no point to leftish themes in his manifesto. And it’s true that — in a line much-quoted by these conservatives — he seems to wish that the government would do something about health care. Then again, who doesn’t?

In the end, the core unifying theme of the Tea Partiers is populist rage, and this is the core theme in Stack’s ramblings, whether the rage is directed at corporate titans (“plunderers”), the government (“totalitarian”) or individual politicians (“liars”).

When the facts make it impossible to indulge the instinct to link a violent extremist to the right – in Dorner and Corkins’ cases for example – the media displays appropriate caution about assigning political motives to their actions.

That is an laudable impulse. The motives that drive disturbed individuals to commit heinous acts of violence, whatever they are, should not be glorified. Dorner’s manifesto clearly indicates that the media, and its coverage of the gun control debate that has followed the Newtown massacre, influenced him significantly. A responsible media would take that into account and maybe, just maybe, ask what they may be doing to contribute to the increased incidences of mass shootings. 

That is a national conversation that Americans deserve. Rest assured, if Dorner or Corkins had been influenced to commit their crimes by right-wing media outlets, we would get it. Sadly, that level of self-awareness is nowhere to be found in today’s media landscape.

Black unemployment has gone up 2 percent under Barack Obama. More Blacks are in poverty and on welfare and using food stamps under Barack Obama. More blacks are being killed under Barack Obama. More blacks are in prison under Barack Obama. More blacks are dropping out of high school and less blacks are getting married under Barack Obama. These are all facts and despite these facts, a record number of blacks still came out to help re-elect Barack Obama to POTUS last year.

Another fact that took place last year was Barack Obama taking it upon himself to visit Newton, CT after the massacre that saw 20 white kids get killed by a lone, crazed gunman, an episode that Obama himself referred to as the "worst day of my presidency" and an episode that would lead to Obama demanding changes in national gun laws. But all teenager Hadiya Pendleton, who performed recently at Obama's inauguration and was shot and killed in Chicago yesterday, gets is a statement from a man whose gone out of his way for gay people, illegal immigrants, faux-climate change loons and everything else that falls under the anti-God, white, social liberal agenda, but hasn't done a damn thing for black people:

President Barack Obama and the first lady are praying for the family of Hadiya Pendleton, the 15-year-old girl who attended the president’s inauguration and was fatally shot Tuesday less than a mile from his Kenwood home.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said he was unaware of a petition urging Obama to attend Hadiya’s funeral. 

Carney did say the first family’s “thoughts and prayers are with the family of Hadiya Pendleton,” who attended inauguration festivities and performed as a baton-twirling majorette with her King College Prep school band at a party sponsored by U.S. Rep Danny K. Davis. 

The national attention to Hadiya’s killing came as Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy pledged Wednesday to find the gunman who fired into a group of Hadiya’s friends as they sought shelter during a rain storm in a park on the 4500 block of South Oakenwald Avenue in the North Kenwood neighborhood. A 16-year-old boy was shot in the leg during the attack and a teenage girl had a graze wound in her ankle.

A reward totaling $11,000 is being offered to anyone with information leading to the killer. Police encouraged anyone with information on the shooting to call (312) 747-8383. The Rev. Michael Pfleger of St. Sabina Church put $5,000 toward the reward and called it “a bounty out on the head of the killer, before you kill somebody else.” 

Correcting initial police reports, McCarthy said that Hadiya’s friends were not gang members.

Rev. Jesse Jackson Repeatedly Challenged To Defend Chicago Gun Ban After 500th Homicide This Year

Rev. Jesse Jackson appeared on CNN on Friday where he was pressed to defend Chicago’s strict gun control laws following the city’s 500th homicide, 87.5 percent of which are gun-related, this year. Jackson said that Chicago, unlike Newtown, has no gun culture – Newtown, Connecticut, having several gun ranges whereas Chicago has none.

He also said that the pressing issues of poverty, unemployment and the lack of a sense of mobility in America’s urban centers are the root causes of gun violence.


Jackson was asked to defend Chicago’s gun ban, given the staggering rates of gun violence in America’s cities compared to other areas that do not have such strict gun laws and experience less gun violence.

“I think about Newtown, for example, they have three or four gun ranges. There are no gun ranges in Chicago,” Jackson replied. “Newtown is so different than the complexity of the urban crisis.”

“40 percent unemployment does matter,” Jackson continued. “Lack of education does matter.” He said that gun crime and joblessness are inextricably linked. 

Jackson was asked again, given Chicago’s gun violence in spite of its strict gun laws, how even stricter gun laws can be justified. 

“The guns are not coming from Chicago,” Jackson replied. “Chicago is in a bubble as the manufacturer — we’re a target market for gun flow. And they exploit the poverty and the pain.”

“It’s not gun violence. It’s also poverty and lack of education and lack of dreams, where people think killing is the only way out,” Jackson concluded. “This is the need for an urban policy of reconstruction.”

Yes. Nancy Lanza Should Be Blamed For Newton, CT Massacre

There just shouldn't be any sympathy for Nancy Lanza. None. She was a reckless gun owner who taught her mentally ill son how to shoot guns, even took him to firing ranges. Adam Lanza didn't buy the guns, his mother purchased the arsenal, and failed to keep her guns secure from Adam. 20 children & 6 other families would still be celebrating Christmas right now if it wasn't for Nancy Lanza's incredible stupidity. And while the idiot media and even dumber extremists on the Right and the Left concentrate on the NRA and more gun control laws, the real blame for the Newton shootings lies with Nancy Lanza and anyone who allows a crazy person to have access to a gun. That's just the God's honest truth:

When many people in Newtown count the victims in last week’s massacre, they tally 20 children in Sandy Hook Elementary School, plus six adult faculty and staff members. Few count shooter Adam Lanza’s first victim: his mother, Nancy. Police said that before he attacked the schoolhouse, Adam Lanza pumped four bullets into his mother’s head as she lay in bed.

As this heartbroken town tries to process Friday’s horror, there is considerable anger toward Lanza’s mother. Her name is noticeably absent from many of the impromptu shrines, memorials and condolence notes placed around town.

At the foot of the street leading to Sandy Hook Elementary, 26 Christmas trees stand to honor the dead at the school, each bearing the name of a victim, but no Nancy Lanza.

Outside the Newtown Convenience and Deli in the town center, 26 small plastic Christmas trees with twinkling blue and purple lights stand next to a sign that says, “In loving memory of the Sandy Hook victims.”

The University of Connecticut honored the shooting victims Monday with a ceremony before a men’s basketball game, with 26 students standing at center court holding lighted candles.

“I am feeling that there is more anger toward the mother than there is toward the son,” said Lisa Sheridan, a Newtown parent.

“Why would a woman who had a son like this, who clearly had serious issues, keep assault rifles in the house and teach him how to shoot them?” she said. “To deal with that, there’s a feeling here that we’re just going to focus on the 26 innocent people who died at the school.”

Limbaugh: ‘Anti-Gun Media’ Don’t Care About Gun Violence When It Involves Urban Neighborhoods

Of course, Limbaugh's right here. When it comes to black-on-black crime or just about any crime involving guns in the inner cities around the country, the hypocrites in the national, liberal media could care less:

On his syndicated radio show this afternoon, Rush Limbaugh went after the “anti-gun media” for, in his belief, not caring about gun violence when it affects urban neighborhoods like Chicago and Oakland.

“You guys ever been to Chicago? Do you know what happens in Chicago every night?” Limbaugh rhetorically asked the pro-gun politicians like Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) who’ve now become pro-gun control in the wake of last week’s massacre. “What happens in Chicago in a week dwarfs what happened in Connecticut. Just nobody’s reporting it. There’s no cameras up there. You don’t see it. All you see is the mayor warning the gangbangers to kill each other instead of other people. That’s all you ever see.”

Limbaugh continued: “Have you ever heard any politician go on an anti-gun rant when you’ve heard about urban violence? Does it ever happen? I’m asking. Those stories out of Chicago were happening daily.

 Drudge was highlighting them. But take your pick. The Rodney King incident, whatever, the Watts riots, pick one. Post-Katrina looting in New Orleans, was the anti-gun control out in force there? They never are, are they? I wonder why that is? Why is it the anti-gun people never use violence in urban neighborhoods as an example of why we have to get rid of guns?” he asked.

The conservative host then cited other cities for example: “Look at the gun violence that took place in Oakland against the cops and so forth. The anti-Second Amendment crowd never gins up, do they?”

He concluded: “There are more than 41 murders a month in Chicago. The lion’s share of them are taking place in poor black neighborhoods. I don’t hear the Reverend [Jesse] Jackson or any of the anti-gun media that we’re hearing from now raise a stink about guns in those places. That’s absolutely right. I wonder why that is. There has to be a reason.”

Gunman Kills 20 Schoolchildren, 6 Adults at Connecticut School

Crazy people having guns isn't a Left or Right thing, or a Democrat or Republican thing, it's a common sense, life or death thing. Because a man who uses a gun to kill innocent children was never interested in "self-defense" or shooting some bear in the woods, Adam Lanza was a madman and a coward hellbent on making a name for himself in the most hellacious way possible. And he did just that. And like day follows night expect the Left to exploit this tragedy in every way possible and in return (as per usual) conservatives will return the fire with 2nd Amendment creeds ad nauseum...yunno, the usual stuff. And in the meantime people will talk "the good fight", but nothing will get done, crazy people will continue to have access to guns and more innocent people will die in the next tragedy...whenever that is:

Dressed in black fatigues and a military vest, a heavily armed man walked into a Connecticut elementary school Friday and opened fire, shattering the quiet of this southern New England town and leaving the nation reeling at the number of young lives lost.

Within minutes, 26 people were dead at Sandy Hook Elementary School -- 20 of them children. Among the six adults killed were Dawn Hochsprung, the school's beloved principal, and school psychologist Mary Sherlach.

The shooter, identified by three law enforcement officials as 20-year-old Adam Lanza, also was killed, apparently by his own hand.

"Stuff like this does not happen in Newtown," a tight-knit community of about 27,000 just outside Danbury, said Renee Burn, a local teacher at another school in town. In the past 10 years, only one homicide had previously been reported.

With the death toll at 26, the Newtown shooting is the second-deadliest school shooting in U.S. history, behind only the 2007 shooting at Virginia Tech that left 32 people dead.

"Evil visited this community today," Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy said of Friday's massacre.

"Fast And Furious" Just Might Be President Obama's Watergate

Why a gunrunning scandal codenamed “Fast and Furious,” a program run secretly by the U.S. government that sent thousands of firearms over an international border and directly into the hands of criminals, hasn’t been pursued by an army of reporters all trying to be the next Bob Woodward or Carl Bernstein is a story in itself.


But the state of modern journalism aside, this scandal is so inflammatory few realize that official records show the current director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), B. Todd Jones — yes the individual the Obama administration brought in to replace ATF Director Kenneth Melson Aug. 30 in an effort to deflect congressional criticism — also has questions to answer about his involvement in this gunrunning scandal.


Fast and Furious was an operation so cloak-and-dagger Mexican authorities weren’t even notified that thousands of semi-automatic firearms were being sold to people in Arizona thought to have links to Mexican drug cartels. According to ATF whistleblowers, in 2009 the U.S. government began instructing gun storeowners to break the law by selling firearms to suspected criminals. ATF agents then, again according to testimony by ATF agents turned whistleblowers, were ordered not to intercept the smugglers but rather to let the guns “walk” across the U.S.-Mexican border and into the hands of Mexican drug-trafficking organizations.


When the Gunrunning Program Began


A Jan. 8, 2010 briefing paper from the ATF Phoenix Field Division Group VII says: “This investigation has currently identified more than 20 individual connected straw purchasers…. To date (September 2009-present) this group has purchased in excess of 650 firearms (mainly AK-47 variants) for which they have paid cash totaling more than $350,000.”


This is an important fact because the U.S. Justice Department hasn’t made it clear to tell congressional investigators when the Fast and Furious operation began and who authorized it; as a result, this ATF briefing paper’s mention of September 2009 is thus far the earliest we can trace the operation.

Authorities Fear Cops Being Targeted After at Least 11 Officers Shot in 24 Hours

Maybe this will give the gun-happy, kooks on the Right a moment to pause and reflect on changing some of the loopholes that are giving criminals and the mentally-challenged possession of guns. Thank goodness, unlike our President, we here in New York City have a mayor who cares about these things:

Authorities are worried a recent wave of police officer shootings may not be a coincidence.


In just 24 hours, at least 11 cops were shot around the country.


The most recent incident at a fugitive's house in St. Petersburg, Fla., left two officers dead and a U.S. marshal wounded Monday. Hours earlier, an Oregon officer was critically wounded after being shot multiple times during a traffic stop.


Monday's violence followed a bloody Sunday that left an officer in Indianapolis critically wounded during a traffic stop shooting, four officers in Indianapolis wounded after a gunman opened fire in a precinct and two more officers in Washington wounded in a shootout in a Walmart parking lot.


"It's not a fluke," Richard Roberts, a spokesman for the International Union of Police Associations, told MSNBC.com. "There's a perception among officers in the field that there’s a war on cops going on."

Jared Loughner Had No Business Owning A Gun

It's what gets lost in all the "who to blame" smears and rhetoric...what business did Jared Loughner have owning a gun?!? The guy was clearly a nutcase. Gun responsibility: that needs to be the conversation we're having in the wake of this senseless tragedy:

The man linked to the shooting today of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and others is 22-year-old Jared Lee Loughner, the Associated Press reported.


Saturday afternoon, police surrounded a house at 7700 N. Soledad Ave., which is the address listed by a man with the same name on a variety of online accounts and in the volunteer registry for the 2010 Tucson Festival of Books. The home is near West Magee Road and North Thornydale Road on the northwest side, about five miles from the shooting scene.


Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik would not confirm Loughner is the suspected shooter. He said the person arrested for the shooting is uninjured and uncooperative.


The suspected shooter has made death threats before and been contacted by law-enforcement officers, but the threats weren't against Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, Dupnik said. The suspect is unstable, Dupnik said, but the sheriff would not say he is "insane."


A former classmate of Loughner at Pima Community College said he was "obviously very disturbed."


"He disrupted class frequently with nonsensical outbursts," said Lynda Sorenson, who took a math class with Loughner last summer at Pima Community College's Northwest campus.


Sorenson doesn't recall if he ever made any threats or uttered political statements but he was very disruptive, she said. He was asked to leave the pre-algebra class several times and eventually was barred from class, said Sorenson, a Tucson resident.


Another Pima classmate, Lydian Ali, said Loughner would frequently laugh aloud to himself during the advanced-poetry class they attended. Only about 16 people were in the class, so Loughner's behavior stood out, Ali said.


"It almost seemed like he was on his own planet, because his comments would have nothing to do with what we were talking about," Ali said.


MySpace, YouTube and Facebook accounts maintained by Loughner suggest he has spent most of his life on the northwest side: His profile says he attended Thornydale Elementary, Tortolita Middle School, Mountain View High School


The online accounts also contain bizarre discussions of a new currency and literacy, as well as threatening and despairing messages.


"WOW! I'm glad i didn't kill myself. I'll see you on National T.v.! This is foreshadow .... why doesn't anyone talk to me?.." he posted on MySpace Dec. 14.


On Dec. 13, he wrote: "I don't feel good: I'm ready to kill a police officer! I can say it."

Supreme Court Affirms Gun Rights Nationwide

The Second Amendment provides Americans a fundamental right to bear arms that cannot be violated by state and local governments, the Supreme Court ruled Monday in a long-sought victory for gun rights advocates. 

The 5 to 4 decision does not strike down any gun-control laws, nor does it elaborate on what kind of laws would offend the Constitution. One justice predicted that an "avalanche" of lawsuits would be filed across the country asking federal judges to define the boundaries of gun ownership and government regulation. 

But Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr., who wrote the opinion for the court's dominant conservatives, said: "It is clear that the Framers . . . counted the right to keep and bear arms among those fundamental rights necessary to our system of ordered liberty." 

The decision extended the court's 2008 ruling in District of Columbia v. Heller that "the Second Amendment protects a personal right to keep and bear arms for lawful purposes, most notably for self-defense within the home." That decision applied only to federal laws and federal enclaves such as Washington; it was the first time the court had said there was an individual right to gun ownership rather than one related to military service. 

Monday's decision might be more symbolic than substantive, at least initially. No cities have laws as restrictive as the handgun bans in the District and in Monday's case from Chicago and its suburb of Oak Park. Although the court's decision did not specifically strike down those laws, Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley said it will make the city's 28-year-old law "unenforceable."
