Bill Clinton To Ted Kennedy: "Obama Would've Been Getting Us Coffee A Few Years Ago"

The forceful 2008 endorsement of Barack Obama by Sen. Edward M. Kennedy – and Kennedy's sudden break with the Clintons – was caused in part by a racist comment made by Bill Clinton to Kennedy over the telephone, according to a new campaign book.

The book, Game Change, by Mark Halperin and John Heilemann, asserts on page 218 that after Obama won the Iowa caucuses, Clinton called Kennedy to press for an endorsement from the influential Massachusetts liberal. But the call backfired, according to the authors, and left Kennedy deeply offended.

The day after Iowa, he phoned Kennedy and pressed for an endorsement, making the case for his wife. But Bill then went on, belittling Obama in a manner that deeply offended Kennedy. Recounting the conversation later to a friend, Teddy fumed that Clinton had said, A few years ago, this guy would have been getting us coffee.

No surprise here. Shocking as it might be to a black liberal, history has long shown us that the biggest racists are in the Democrat party. As the self-proclaimed party for the poor and disenfranchised, the Democrat party, despite its century-long trail of racism, has long taken advantage of black folks, owning the black vote while giving back almost nothing in return. So no doubt too that once Slick Willie speaks on this alleged remark (and knowing the Slickster, he certainly will), this too shall pass, liberal blacks will forgive their "1st black President" and white liberals within the Democrat can get back to p-owning blacks for their votes like they have the for the past 40 years. If only Barry and co. were so kind to Trent Lott.

Why He's Person of the Week: The idea that any American wary of the war in Iraq is unpatriotic is a dumb one because this feeling isn't just being felt by liberals, but by most Americans. As someone who agreed with the decision going after Saddam Hussien 4 years ago, I too have grown wary of a war that no one (including President Bush) thought would still going on today. I too have grown wary reading about our soldiers being killed everyday in Iraq, over 3,000 strong now. I too want to see more results in Iraq and that's why I totally agree with the honest remarks Trent Lott made this week regarding Bush's recent troop "surge": ""I do think this fall we have to see some significant changes on the ground, in Baghdad and other surrounding areas. By the time we get to September or October, members are going to want to know how well this is working, and if it isn't, what's Plan B."

This isn't about leaving Iraq. We made a promise to the Iraqi people to establish democracy, help them rebuild their country as well as assist them in the war on terrorism and we should keep it. We'd be hypocrites to promote democracy here while ignoring the threat to democracy that exists in other countries around the world. But the time has long past come for the Iraqi government and army to step up to the plate and take more responsibility for what's going on in their country. That some Republicans are demanding to see more results in Iraq isn't about going along with the "surrender" crowd, it's about common sense and our troops.
