Bill O’Reilly And Bernie Goldberg Take On Dan Rather: First Paragraph Of Obit Will Contain ‘Memo-Gate’

Former CBS anchor Dan Rather was supposed to make an appearance on The O’Reilly Factor tomorrow, but it turns out he cancelled. On his show Monday, Bill O’Reilly chatted with Bernie Goldberg and pondered why that might be.


On Monday, Rather doubled down on his controversial report about President George W. Bush Texas Air National Guard service — the story that led to his leaving the network. “You lost in the court of law,” O’Reilly said. “Your assertion was not deemed credible.” How you do squared that? Rather would have to answer those questions, O’Reilly said, and that’s probably why he canceled.


Goldberg chimed in with his take. “I think Dan would rather be interviewed by an ideological soulmate — whether it’s George Stephanopoulos or Chris Matthews or somebody like that — rather than sit down and be grilled by you. [...] I don’t think he’d want to sit down and be grilled by you, so I don’t think it’s really that complicated.”


Rather made his reputation being confrontational, O’Reilly observed, so one would think he’d take the opportunity to go to come on the show. He added that, if he kicked O’Reilly’s butt, Rather would look like a hero, so “it’s a win-win.”


Goldberg agreed, and added:

You would think so. I mean, he took on in what turned out to be a disaster. He took on George Bush the elder on the CBS Evening News. He sat down face-to-face with Saddam Hussein who could have had him killed before he left the country. But, I know it doesn’t sound logical, but I think he is more comfortable with sitting down with a murderer, like Saddam Hussein, than he is — I know, you know what i’m going to say — than sitting down with you. I mean, look. The only reason people cancel, the only reason people cancel is because they have a conflict of scheduling and that wasn’t it.

O’Reilly said, “I think he is painfully aware of the fact that some day down the road when somebody writes the obit for Dan Rather, in the first paragraph it’s going to contain the words either Memo-Gate or Rather-Gate or something like that. I think that hurts him terribly.”


Goldberg added that Rather is “like Captain Ahab, who became obsessed with the whale, who did him in, he can’t let this go.”

You just know that if Glenn Beck or Rush Limbaugh or any Republican pol had said this, they'd get a week's worth of scorn from the liberal press (much less Sharpton and Jesse). But Rather is a Democrat who once tried to get President Bush impeached, so that makes it ok to be a bigot, yunno like Harry Reid.

Appeals Court Tosses Dan Rather's Lawsuit Against CBS

Newsman Dan Rather suffered another blow Tuesday in his long legal fight with CBS when a state appeals court dismissed his $70 million suit against the network.

The folksy newsman sued CBS after his 44-year career at the network collapsed in the wake of a disputed September 2004 report about President George W. Bush's Vietnam-era military service.

"This is the death knell for the Rather complaints," said Louis Briskman, general counsel for CBS.

Rather, 77, filed suit in September 2007, charging that his contract was breached and that he lost job opportunities when he was "warehoused" and scapegoated by network honchos who wanted to make nice with the Bush White House.

But an Appellate Division panel unanimously sided with the network, pointing out that the former "CBS Evening News" anchorman continued to collect his $6 million annual salary until he finally parted ways with CBS in June 2006.

A lawyer for Rather said he plans to take the case to the state's highest court.

Whether you liked him or not, there's no doubt that Dan Rather was once a respected journalist and news anchor adept on briefing viewers on matters of importance. Yet for some reason Rather developed a sudden bout of Bush Derangement Syndrome, linked up with the Michael Moore-led crowd of Bush haters hellbent on getting John Kerry elected president in '04 and risked his reputation, all in a sorry bid to make him popular with the unstable Left. But he screwed up....royally and paid the price with not only his job, but his once stellar reputation. Looking back it probably wasn't worth it, but don't we all wish that we could get do-overs.

Dan Rather: "Bout Of Bush Derangement Syndrome Not My Fault"

The now disgraced former CBS NewsAnchor blames everybody but himself for the bout of BDS he caught back in '04 that eventually got him booted from his job:

Longtime CBS anchorman Dan Rather is suing his former employer for $70 million, alleging the network breached his contract, tried to destroy his reputation and ran him off as a 60 Minutes correspondent during his final days at CBS.

In the lawsuit filed yesterday in Manhattan, the 75-year-old Rather revisits the 2004 "Memogate" controversy that ended his 24-year career as anchorman of the CBS Evening News. (He left the anchor desk under a cloud of controversy in March 2005.)

Memogate centered on Rather alleging on the basis of unverified documents that President Bush received preferential treatment in the Texas Air National Guard during his tour of duty at the time of the Vietnam War. CBS News was forced to retract the story and apologize for the charges that Rather made.

CBS issued a statement yesterday saying, "These complaints are old news and this lawsuit is without merit."

With Katie Couric The Ratings Speak For Themselves

Here's the deal. Last time I checked Katie Couric was a grown-ass woman (and she sure as hell gets paid like one). And when you're cashing huge paychecks every 1st and 15th of the month that Couric does, the people who hired you have a right to expect and demand results. And so far in her gig as CBS anchorwoman Katie Couric has failed miserably in getting results, so much so it's literally become embarrassing. Those are the facts. It's not about being sexist. It's about a company paying an employee a shitload of money and getting little to nothing in return--Business 101 could tell you what a bad move that is. And we all know that if she didn't happen to be named Katie Couric, CBS wouldn't be trying to come up with lame excuses in defense of her. So mind you, despite the fact that I can't stand Dan Rather, but he's totally on point here:

After initial excitement about Couric's move from her spot as co-host of NBC's "Today" show to the nightly news, the broadcast quickly slipped again to trail its competitors.

Talking via phone to Joe Scarborough on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," Rather described Couric as a "nice person" - then let her have it.

Speculating on the program's declining ratings, Rather said, "The mistake was to try to bring the 'Today' show ethos to the 'Evening News' and to dumb it down - tart it up in hopes of attracting a younger audience."

Then in a kinder vein, he said Couric "tried to change networks, which is always difficult, and change the programs at the same time." Then he opened fire again.

He said the program "trend line" continues to lean toward excessive and overdone celebrity coverage.
