CNN Report Slams Obama Administration on Benghazi: "Inconsistent, Conflicting, Inaccurate"

Perhaps I spoke to soon in criticizing CNN's John King for focusing so much of his Benghazi analysis on Republicans exploiting -- or thinking of exploiting -- the scandal for political purposes.  In a segment that aired as part of the network's special report on the terrorist attack, King was harshly critical of the administration's handling of the massacre and its aftermath:

"There is no disputing this: The explanations have at times been inconsistent, conflicting, and inaccurate ... [Carney soundbyte on single minor change to talking points].  That's just not true.  We now know the National Security Council staff was behind several edits and the State Department pushed others."

In the column I critiqued this morning, King also cites "indefensible" policy decisions carried out by the Clinton State Department in the months and weeks leading up to the raid -- including several attempted attacks on the US diplomatic mission itself:

Nearly a year later, Benghazi remains a flashpoint in Washington for two very different reasons: indefensible pre-attack policy decisions and irresistible post-attack politics. The Obama White House, from the president on down, complains of "phony" Republican-led congressional investigations. Yet the administration's own reluctant, and at times inaccurate, responses to congressional inquiries have contributed to the GOP charge that the administration, at a minimum, has been less than transparent. "We need to get to the bottom of what happened that terrible night, why it happened, and how we can prevent similar tragedies in the future," House Speaker John Boehner said last week in serving notice the House Benghazi investigations would continue into the fall, and include new subpoenas for documents and testimony if necessary. There are legitimate questions about why repeated and specific warnings about the Benghazi security situation were undervalued or ignored.

It's a pretty sure bet that CNN's renewed interest in this story -- including reportage on major new revelations, withering assessments of the administration's conduct, and an interview with a defiant attacker on the ground in Libya -- led to the filing of criminal charges yesterday.  Though many of these questions remain as pertinent today as they were months ago, a new line of inquiry has opened up:  What was the US government really up to in Benghazi?  Why were so many CIA operatives in the city?  How did their operation blow up so badly?  And why were the injured and dying essentially abandoned for nearly a full day?  In light of recent embassy closings, drone strikes, and other threats, this pre-election bravado seems a tad unseemly:

Powerful Lesbian Celebrity Ellen DeGeneres Hosting Oscars to Appease Women, Gays

Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres will host the 86^th Academy Awards next year on March 2, 2014. The pick is a natural fit. DeGeneres is popular, likeable and experienced, having previously hosted the ceremony in 2007. 

But more important, her presence will appease women and gays while dousing the Academy’s reputation as “an old white man’s club.” And that’s not the opinion of some stodgy conservative group – it comes right from the The Hollywood Reporter’s awards analyst.

According to Scott Feinberg of Hollywood Reporter (THR) the Academy’s going back to DeGeneres is calculated: “What better way could there be for the Academy to distance itself from offensive comments about women and gays than to hire the world's most famous and popular lesbian entertainer to be its public face to millions of people around the world?” 

DeGeneres rose as an attractive pick not only because she comes across as “funny,” “safe,” “familiar,” and “savvy” but also because she, “helps to counter the perception,” The Hollywood Reporter noted, “that the Academy is a club of old white men.” 

In other words, Seth Macfarlane fell short of an ideal host last year. As  Feinberg wrote, Macfarlane “behaved in a way that many felt was misogynistic,” from chanting about Oscar-nominated actresses in a “We Saw Your Boobs” song to suggesting that 9-year-old best actress nominee Quvenzhane Wallis would one day have sex with George Clooney. 
 
Just a year before that, Oscars producer Brett Ratner ran afoul of Hollywood sensibilities when he resigned from the production of the 85th Academy Awards after making inappropriate gay remarks.

Smug MSNBC Host Lawrence Distorts Bill O'Reilly, Touts 'Proof' Out-of-Wedlock Birth Not So Bad

On Monday's The Last Word on MSNBC, host Lawrence O'Donnell claimed to present "proof" that FNC's Bill O'Reilly was wrong in his July 22 commentary on race to warn about the negative effects of out-of-wedlock births on the black population.

The MSNBC host also managed to take O'Reilly out of context as O'Donnell suggested that the O'Reilly's were not relevant to Trayvon Martin because he was the product of a two-parent family, the FNC host, in reality, was arguing that out-of-wedlock birth leads to high crime rates among the black population, which leads to people having elevated fear of young black men.

And, while O'Donnell claimed that O'Reilly "defended" the shooting of Trayvon Martin, O'Reilly actually asserted that "it was wrong for Zimmerman to confront Martin based on his appearance," which hardly amounts to a total defense of Zimmerman's actions.

O'Donnell teased the segment by predicting that O'Reilly would be "embarrassed." O'Donnell:

Yes, right here on a cable news program, a story that we can all feel good about. Democrats, conservatives, liberals, Republicans, everyone except possibly Bill O'Reilly, who might be a little embarrassed about how he's manipulated some of the talk around this kind of story.

In another plug, the MSNBC host promised that he would present "proof that Bill O'Reilly is not the sociologist he thinks he is."
The segment began with a clip of President Obama responding to Zimmerman's acquittal, with O'Donnell then charging:

Bill O'Reilly hated that speech, hated it. He angrily took to his microphone to defend the killing of Trayvon Martin because, quote, "he was a stranger to Zimmerman and was dressed in clothing sometimes used by street criminals," O'Reilly's words.

The MSNBC host's quote of O'Reilly omitted his next line:

It was wrong for Zimmerman to confront Martin based on his appearance. But the culture that we have in this country does lead to criminal profiling because young black American men are so often involved in crime the statistics overwhelming.

After playing a clip of O'Reilly linking crime to out-of-wedlock birth, O'Donnell ignored his point about the role that the fear of crime played in Zimmerman and Martin's confontation and instead lectured:

Never mind that Trayvon Martin was the son of a very involved and loving father. And never mind that Barack Obama grew up without a father and went on to do rather well for himself and be a credit to his single mother.

O'Donnell then recounted the story of two young black men -- Justin Porter and Travis Reginal -- who are successful college students and were both raised by single mothers, as if their success proves that single parenthood is not generally detrimental to children. O'Donnell:

And in our next segment, I will have the honor of introducing you to two young black men Bill O'Reilly has never met. They went to high school together in Jackson, Mississippi. Now, one is at Harvard and the other is at Yale. They will both tell you why they owe their success to their heroic single mothers.

Part-time Jobs Account For 97% Of 2013 Job Growth

Once again, don't believe the hype:

The July government employment report released Friday showed the job market treading water.

And a closer look at one of the two measures the Labor Department uses to gauge employment suggests that part-time work accounted for almost all the job growth that’s been reported over the past six months.

Employers added a weaker-than-expected 162,000 nonfarm payroll jobs in July, according to the Establishment Data Survey, which relies on reporting by a large sample of businesses. 

The unemployment rate is measured by the separate Household Survey, and it fell two-tenths of a percentage point to 7.4 percent, its lowest level since December 2008. That’s due in part to slow growth in the labor force. The jobless rate is based on a sample of self-reporting from ordinary people across the nation, and it’s the Labor Department measure that shows a very troubling trend in hiring.

“Over the last six months, of the net job creation, 97 percent of that is part-time work,” said Keith Hall, a senior researcher at George Mason University’s Mercatus Center. “That is really remarkable.”

Hall is no ordinary academic. He ran the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the agency that puts out the monthly jobs report, from 2008 to 2012. Over the past six months, he said, the Household Survey shows 963,000 more people reporting that they were employed, and 936,000 of them reported they’re in part-time jobs.

“That is a really high number for a six-month period,” Hall said. “I’m not sure that has ever happened over six months before.”

1987 Rape-Hoaxer Tawana Brawley Finally Ordered To Pay Up For Lying

Led by notorious race-baiters Al Sharpton, C. Vernon Mason and Alton Maddox, Tawana Brawley, a young and loose, black teenager being raised by a single parent in the suburbs of New York City, made national headlines when she was a found in a garbage bag covered with feces and accused at least three white men of abducting and sexually assaulting her. One of the three men Brawley accused of raping her was Steven Pagones, at the time a married assistant district attorney.

Of course, like files to honey, the liberal media and celebrities like Bill Cosby jumped all over Brawley and Shapton's story with the NYTimes (which doesn't give a damn about everyday, black-on-black crime) at the forefront--all the while spoon-feeding and stoking tension in an urban community that white liberals desperately need for votes.

Later, a subsequent investigation would find Brawley's story to be a fabrication, a tale concocted to cover up her late-night escapades and fear of beatings from her stepfather, a man who had fatally shot his ex-wife. And while Brawley would get her life together and later become a nurse (Sharpton would move on to more scandals and now hosts his own show on the far-Left news channel MSNBC), after he was falsely accused of rape, Pagones' life would never be the same as he lost both his wife and his job.

However, in 1998, Pagones did win a defamation suit against Brawley (who still has never publicly admitted to her lie), which has grown to $431,492 with interest due to Brawley's lack of payments. That is, until this year when a Virginia court ordered Brawley's employer, The Laurels of Bon Air nursing home in Richmond, to garnish her wages:

A black woman who set off a racial firestorm after claiming she was raped by a gang of white law enforcement officials in 1987 has begun making defamation payments to a man she falsely accused.

Tawana Brawley was 15 when she reported being raped in New York. A grand jury concluded Brawley's story was a hoax.

The New York Post reports (http://bit.ly/14USZiy) Brawley has paid just over $3,700 to former county prosecutor Steven Pagones. Pagones won a claim against her and her advisers, including the Rev. Al Sharpton, after he was named as an attacker.

Brawley was initially ordered to pay $190,000 but now owes more than $400,000 with interest.
She now lives in Virginia and works as a nurse. Her parents have insisted Brawley's claim of being raped was true.
