MSNBC’s Most Embarrassing Mockery of Mitt Romney’s Russia Warnings

The smug self-assuredness that often suffices for expertise on cable news was perhaps never more smug than when former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney warned the American public that Russia was rapidly positioning itself as America’s “number one geopolitical foe.” Among the worst offenders were the hosts and guests who provide MSNBC with content on a daily basis. 

In early 2012, President Barack Obama was caught on an open microphone telling Russia’s then-President Dmitry Medvedev that he would have more “flexibility” after the presidential election in his dealings with Russia. Romney reacted strongly to that comment. Appearing on CNN, the GOP nominee said that the United States should regard Russia as a geopolitical adversary and should work to limit Russia’s flexibility rather than to secure it. His observation was soundly criticized by the president’s defenders who, at the time, were still attempting to rehabilitate Obama’s floundering “Reset” with Russia. 

There were few who defended Romney’s comments. Even snake-bit Republicans, chastened by the swift backlash in the media, hedged when asked to back up Romney’s assessment of the challenges posed by Moscow. But MSNBC’s wagons circled particularly quickly in defense of the president. Volley after volley of snark was lobbed in the GOP nominee’s direction.

“I don’t know what decade this guy’s living in,” MSNBC host Chris Matthews said with a sigh on March 28, 2012. “Is he trying to play Ronald Reagan here, or what?”

“This is Mitt Romney’s severely conservative problem,” University of Georgia professor Cynthia Tucker opined on-the-air. “It made Romney look dumb. He’s not a dumb man, but he said something that was clearly dumb.”

Huffington Post reporter Sam Stein agreed that Romney’s statement was evidence of an “antiquated worldview.” He fretted further about how Romney, should he become president, would enter the office having severely complicated America’s bilateral relations with Moscow given his carelessly provocative statement. 

“I personally am worried about what it says to the Russian people,” Matthews added to a chorus of sagely nods.

MSNBC hosts Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O’Donnell got in on the self-satisfied ridicule, too. 

 Promoting Maddow’s latest book about the “unmooring of American military power,” O’Donnell asked the flagship MSNBC host if Romney was merely reflecting on what he might have read in that book. 

“He read about Reagan’s private, outside-the-CIA cabal of team-B zealots who were telling him that Russia had all the stuff they didn’t have so he could justify a giant defense budget,” Maddow submitted scornfully. 

“It is amazing that Mitt Romney can flip like that just as soon as he hears something to exploit in foreign policy,” O’Donnell remarked.

Maddow took her observations about Romney’s position on Russia one ill-advised step further on her MSNBC.com blog:

I can appreciate why the Romney campaign would try to make Obama’s “hot mic” story interesting, but the problem is the former governor just doesn’t have any real policy chops in this area. He’s out of his depth, and struggles when the subject takes center stage.
It’s not just that Romney is uninformed; it’s that he hasn’t figured out how to fake it.

Appearing on Andrea Mitchell Reports in April of that year, Romney surrogate and former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour was confronted by the MSNBC anchor. Calling Romney’s comments “a throwback to the Cold War,” Mitchell insisted that “we work with Russia all the time.” “Hardly an ally but certainly not an adversary,” she declared.

But the worst offender was one who should have, and likely did, know better, former Secretary of State Colin Powell. The former Army general greatly entertained his MSNBC hosts with some of the most snide commentary about Romney’s observation. 

“Come on, Mitt. Think,” Powell said of Romney’s remark in May to the chuckles of host Joe Scarborough. “That isn’t the case.” 

He went on to suggest that Romney’s assessment of the threat posed by Russia was so dubious that it was possible he was being disingenuous or he was coached to make that statement.

MSNBC Hypocrite Chris Matthews Hilariously Takes Issue with Someone Else Using Hyperbolic Rhetoric

On Monday’s Hardball, Chris Matthews took issue with someone engaging in hyperbolic rhetoric. 

Specifically, a Republican state senator who said that Obamacare “has done more damage to the USA then [sic] the swords of the Nazis, Soviets & terrorists combined.” This state senator has not backed down, and Matthews had some fun taking him down, saying that “Ted Cruz has a formidable challenger in the hyperbole department,” but it’s not as if Matthews himself has been immune from making over-the-top statements of his own.

I mean, I really don’t even have to go that far back to find an example to make this point. It was just last week that Matthews declared that conservative radio hosts are just as crazy as Kim Jong-Un (meaning that every uncle in the country should watch out for Glenn Beck now).

Saying Obamacare’s worse than the Nazis? To the nuthouse! Comparing political opponents to the uncle-killing leader of North Korea? To the prompter!

And he also recently followed up a softball interview with President Obama by saying Obama’s critics are less patriotic than the apartheid leaders in Nelson Mandela‘s South Africa.

Matthews has always professed to be above the fray and has rejected the label “media critic” on more than one occasion (though it didn’t stop him from going after Beck and Mark Levin last week). But this is getting tiresome. This is not the first time Matthews has said something patently outrageous only to move on the next day and say, “Hey, why can’t the other side be more civil?”

Chris Matthews received his long-desired wish on Thursday, an exclusive interview with Barack Obama. The Hardball anchor didn't exactly live up to the title of his show, wondering about Republican efforts to "make it difficult for minorities to vote" and questioning who was better, Hillary Clinton or Joe Biden?

Talking to the President at American University, Matthews read a question from a viewer via Twitter: "What can we do to stop the GOP, the Republicans, from rigging the states, rigging the votes, state by state, to disenfranchise voters and destroy our democracy?" The host added, "Thirty six states right now led by Republican legislatures have been trying to make it difficult for minority people to vote, especially in big cities and older people. Everybody knows the game."

Tossing a softball to Obama, he queried, "What's your reaction?"

At one point, the MSNBC host playfully teased the President, joking, "I have to ask you a little question you may not like to answer." He continued, "It's an essay question. The qualities required of a president. Vice President Joe Biden, Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, compare and contrast."

Smiling at the cozy question, Obama laughed and then responded, "Not a chance I'm going there."

What Isn't Racist? According to the Liberal Media, Nothing

President Obama's election was supposed to usher in an era of racial unity greater than any Americans had previously experienced. By making the historic move to place the first black president in the White House, Americans signified that they were ready to move beyond the racial conflicts of the past and move forward, arm-in-arm. 

At least that's what we were told. 

So much for that. 

In the last two weeks, MSNBC's Chris Matthews, official hot-air-trial balloon for the Obama administration's public relations strategy, has played the race card incessantly. First, he proclaimed that Republican New Jersey senatorial candidate Steve Lonegan was using a racist "dog whistle" when he stated that Cory Booker's Newark was a "black hole" for state tax funds. Then, Matthews said that tea partiers using the word "we the people" to describe the country signified racism, since not everyone agrees with the tea party program. Then, to top it all off, Matthews declared Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, who is of Cuban descent, a racist for joking upon his return to Texas, "Gee, it's great to be back in America." That led Matthews into this wild rant: "This 'We're Americans, we white people out here in Texas, as opposed to people who live in the big cities: the ethnics, the blacks, the browns. Those people in Washington, those liberals, they're not Americans.' This guy either has a total lack of understanding of American history and the hell we went through in the McCarthy period or he knows it damn well and is playing that card." 

Matthews has not been strapped into the straitjacket yet, but he's getting close. 

Meanwhile, Rep. Alan Grayson, D-Fla., went further than Matthews, declaring that the tea party was akin to the Ku Klux Klan. He put out a flyer to his constituents with a burning cross in place of the "t" in the word "tea." The flyer stated, "The Tea Party is no more popular than the Klan." When called on to disown this race-baiting trash, Grayson instead doubled down, stating, "there is overwhelming evidence that the Tea Party is the home of bigotry and discrimination in America today, just as the KKK was for an earlier generation. If the shoe fits, wear it." Grayson did not explain why the KKK was a group that voted unanimously Democrat, why progressive hero Woodrow Wilson was a huge fan of the KKK, and why KKK former honcho Robert Byrd was treasured by the Democratic Party until the day he died. 

Charges of racism have echoed from nearly every left-leaning mouth of late. Opposition to Obamacare: racist. Opposition to President Obama on the shutdown: racist. Don't like the president's tie-shirt combination? Racist. 

This is not what Americans were promised. What's worse, it's un-American drivel. Ascribing racial motives to those who have none has become a near pathological condition among those on the left who cannot come to terms that their beloved leader's second term is a policy disaster. Racism is the last bullet in the leftist arsenal. And they're running out of ammo quickly.

Chris Matthews Reveals MSNBC Hosts, Anchors Under ‘Group Pressure’ to Be More Partisan

In a wide-ranging interview with Ora.TV host Larry King, MSNBC host Chris Matthews admitted that the hosts on the liberal cable news network are under “group pressure” to display a more liberal partisan slant. He added that this directive is not unique to MSNBC. Other cable networks, Matthews said, are under the same pressure to exhibit personality and display their points of view.


“I’m watching Fox,” Matthews told King. “Will Megyn Kelly be able to stay in the middle or will she move over? Will she have to move over? Look at Greta [Van Susteren]. Greta was more center-left now she’s moved over.”

“There’s a lot of group pressure in those places,” he added. “In any place you work.”

When asked if there was any pressure on him specifically to be more openly partisan, Matthews said that there was. “Oh, I feel it,” he said. “I think it’s there.”

“I think you know your audience,” Matthews added. “I always know who I’m talking to. But I always want to keep a chunk of Republicans as well as Democrats.”

Frequent MSNBC Guest Roger Simon Wishes Death on Ted Cruz, Accuses Him of Waging a 'War Against Babies'

In his Monday column Politico's Roger Simon unleashed an anti-GOP rant where he accused the Republican Party of letting "racism out of the closet," accused it of waging "a war against babies" and wished death on two of its leaders Ted Cruz and John Boehner.

In his column headlined "Government shutdown unleashes racism" Simon wasted no time in attacking Republicans by putting his twist on old anti-lawyer joke: "Question: If Ted Cruz and John Boehner were both on a sinking ship, who would be saved? Answer: America." Simon then went on to accuse Cruz of "making a war against babies," as seen in the following excerpt:

Harsh? Look around you at what is happening to America and you will see harsh. I am not talking about closed parks and monuments. I am talking about the funds cut to nearly 9 million mothers and young children for food, breastfeeding support and infant formula.

That is harsh. Making a war against babies is harsh. And for what? Because Cruz, Republican senator from Texas, has grown so drunk on the sound of his own voice and so besotted with illusions of his own grandeur that he believes halting government today will propel him into the White House tomorrow?

After railing against the GOP's "Kamikaze Caucus", Simon then used one Confederate Flag waving protestor to paint an entire movement as racist:

This weekend, racism came out of the closet. (Which assumes it has ever been in the closet.)Protesters marched through the streets of Washington on Sunday with a Confederate flag and then a protester lounged against the White House fence with one. Displaying the Confederate flag in front of a home occupied by a black family was meant to send a particular, and particularly repellent, message.

The last several days have been taxing for many members of the political press. The burst of scandals surrounding the conduct of the White House on a variety of fronts have forced the media to turn a critical eye towards the president. Some prominent conservative commentators have warned that this behavioral aberration by much of the establishment media cannot last. They have said that even the slightest overstep by Republicans in response to the White House’s scandals would give the press and excuse to revert to their familiar and satisfying focus on the GOP’s pathological mistrust of President Barack Obama and his policies. While the press does not yet have an overwhelming amount of material to support this effort, they have begun to settle back into that comfortable place.


“The IRS has admitted to targeting conservatives, even if the White House continues to be stuck on the word ‘if,’” said House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) at a Wednesday news conference. “Now my question isn’t about who’s going to resign. My question is: Who’s going to jail over this scandal?”

Sure, it’s not much to go on, but this undoubtedly a hyperbolic reaction – at least, at this stage — to the news that the Internal Revenue Service systematically targeted conservative groups with onerous and burdensome information requests which forced some to abandon their effort to secure tax-exempt status has given the press a reason to focus once again on Republicans.

With utter predictability, the media sprang into action with a righteous scolding. 

“Now you’re hearing even further politicization of something that may not be so political,” declared CNN anchor Ashleigh Banfield. “When you start hearing the cry for potential jail terms — specifically when it comes to the IRS issue in targeting of conservative groups, do you see this as going that far?”

The short answer to this question from George Washington University Law Professor Jonathan Turley was “no.” Not because of the criminal misconduct of the IRS, but because “rarely do people go to jail for it.”

MSNBC anchor Thomas Roberts followed suit. He began his segment on GOP overreach by playing a portion of Republican National Committee web video chastising the president for failing to abide by his own promise of transparency. 

Salon columnist Irin Carmon was available to defuse the president’s multiple controversies for MSNBC’s anxious audience. 

“With Benghazi, Republicans have not really found a smoking gun,” Carmon asserted. “I don’t even understand that they are accusing the president of doing.”

She added that the scandals surrounding the IRS and the Associated Press are slightly more complicated but, in her opinion, the GOP would be exhibiting extraordinary hypocrisy if they were to even acknowledge the existence of a scandal. 

“For Republicans, it would be pretty hypocritical to pretend to care about it,” Carmon said of the Department of Justice’s acquisition of months of telephone records form the AP.

“Well, sure,” Roberts agreed. “It was last year, roughly about this time, that the right – that is – was asking a lot of questions of the White House.” 

“They even accused the president of being the one in the administration of sending these leaks out into the public on their own,” he noted.

This trend is certain to accelerate. These are, for now, the political press’ opening bid to shift the focus of the story about the White House’s scandalous overreach into a story about Republican’s pathological desire to attack the president and his administration.

MSNBC Race-Baiter Chris Matthews Ignores History, Says Only White People Can Be "Racist"

"Tingles" just foolishly let the whole MSNBC business plan out the bag with this one:

MSNBC Chris Matthews has a sociological lesson for conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh. After playing a clip of Limbaugh identifying racial antipathy in comments made by a pastor who spoke in front of President Barack Obama, Matthews took Limbaugh to school on the definition of racism. He said that racism, by definition, is the belief that white people alone should “rule” all other races. This is a “definition” unknown to students of global racial conflict.

Rev. Luis León presided over Easter Sunday services attended by President Obama recently, and has taken fire from the right for suggesting that racial hatred lurks in the hearts of conservatives. 

During his radio show, Limbaugh agreed with a caller who suggested that León was merely following the president’s lead in accusing the right of latent racism.

“Actually, Rushbo, racism is the belief that one race – whites — should rule all others,” Matthews confidently declared. “Get your definitions straight.”

While the history of racial discrimination by whites against minorities in the United States and around the world is voluminous and ongoing, racism and racially motivated violence is by no means a phenomenon limited to white people. 

On every populated continent on earth, racially motivated discrimination is an ongoing problem: Malaysian schools discriminating against Chinese students, Indian Hindus discriminating against Muslims, Zimbabwean militias ransacking white-owned farms, Libyan rebels targeting black residents, Israeli Jews discriminating against Palestinians, et cetera. 

And these are just the presently raging across the globe, to say nothing of the tragic history of racial violence around the world. And this is purely ethnic, to say nothing of religious intolerance fueling global discord and complicating international relations. 

Matthew’s claim that white people are the sole practitioners of racism is plainly, almost proudly, ignorant. Furthermore, such a statement suggests a lack of intellectual rigor or even curiosity about the nature of global conflict. At the very least, statements like these do not serve the audience of a news program.

Former MSNBC Host Phil Donahue: Chris Matthews Saw Me As ‘Threat To His Supremacy’

In the run-up to the Iraq War, there were very few voices in the media who were openly opposed to it, even on MSNBC. One of the loudest critics at the time was Phil Donahue, and despite the fact that his MSNBC show Donahue did well compared to other MSNBC shows at the time, it was cancelled less than a year after it began. With the war’s 10th anniversary upon us this week, Donahue sat down with HuffPostLive to talk about his firing and time at the network, as well as making some interesting comments about Chris Matthews. Donahue said his popularity at the network was a personal threat to Matthews, who he described as “emotionally upset.”

Marc Lamont Hill played a clip of Donahue and Matthews back in 2002, in which Matthews berates Donahue for always being so negative and pessimistic about the United States. After briefly dissecting how people like Matthews at the time were unfairly equating patriotic dissent with hating the U.S., Donahue divulged some information about his former colleague. He said that Matthews “wanted to be the face of the network” and noted how he was quoted in a magazine as predicting Donahue would be MSNBC’s downfall.

Donahue shared his theory on why Matthews disliked him so much.

“I think he saw me as a threat to his supremacy. He wanted to be the face of MSNBC, and here comes this talk show host… I think I was a threat to his goal of being the man of MSNBC. And he was quite emotional. He was emotionally upset.”

Black Liberals Bowing Down To The Altar of Rachel Maddow

Since Barack Obama became President he has gone out of his way to help garner "civil rights" for people who engage in same-sex behavior and illegal immigrants. During that same time Black unemployment has increased, as has crime, teenage pregnancy in the urban community and the percentage of blacks in prison. These facts haven't stopped blacks from not only assisting greatly in Obama getting re-elected, but watching MSNBC, the countries best, race-baiting channel designed to  lock Blacks down on a Democrat plantation that no longer cares about the needs of black people:

2012 was a very good year for cable news, with a presidential election that generated huge public interest, and a brightly-lit media landscape that cranked out content to a voracious audience. While Fox News remained the number one cable news network, and CNN performed well on breaking news stories, MSNBC had a lot to brag about in 2012. The network enjoyed significant (around 20%) ratings increases across the board, but made astonishing gains with their already-large African American audience, growing that audience by 60.5% for the Mon-Sun 8pm-11pm period. MSNBC President Phil Griffin told me, in a phone interview, that he is “thrilled” with that result, and that it “says a lot about what we’ve been doing over the last few years.”

In that same time period, CNN grew its black audience by 23.7%(from 131,000 in 2011 to 162,000 in 2012, 23.9% of their total audience) , while Fox News’ declined by 23.7% (38,000 in 2011 to 29,000 in 2012, 1.4% of their total audience), but MSNBC had more black viewers than both of those nets combined (from 177,000 in 2011 to 284,000 in 2012, 31.4% of their total audience). What’s more impressive is that MSNBC attained 60% growth after being number one in that demographic last year, and the year before.

“This has been steady growth for us for some time,” Griffin noted. “I think we made a commitment, we decided, that in order for this channel to succeed, that we had to reflect the country. This meant that we had to be part of the country in ways that the other channels weren’t.”

Part of that commitment, according to Griffin, is the “look” of the channel. ”We have a diverse on-air group of people,” Griffin said, “because that matters, and people want to know that we reflect their world. And it’s not just a single show – its across the board. You look at the guests every hour and we make sure that we have women, African Americans, everything, and I think to spend a day watching MSNBC is to see America as we have seen it.”

That diverse array of talent, including hosts like Tamron Hall, Touré, Melissa Harris-Perry, and Rev. Al Sharpton, and ubiquitous contributors like Joy Reid, Goldie Taylor, Karen Finney, Prof. Michael Erik Dyson, Chairman Michael Steele, Eugene Robinson, and Jonathan Capehart, is an organic result of the network’s editorial philosophy, rather than an end unto itself, says Griffin.

“It wasn’t like we said ‘Oh, we have to have a diverse person on here and there,’” he said. “We made a decision. We made a commitment in ideas, issues and everything – the audience followed, and that goes back to four or five years ago. As we grew, we recognized that it was the right thing to do. It’s giving a voice to people in these kinds of programs who don’t always get a voice. Our look is as diverse as any on mainstream TV. I’m incredibly proud of it. It’s not like we decided ‘We’re going to increase our African American viewership by 60%,’ but I’m thrilled that it happened, and it says a lot about what we’ve been doing over the last few years.”

2012 was also a year in which race played a central part in some huge news stories, and MSNBC was instrumental in putting them on the public’s radar.

Fire Chris Matthews For His Crass Comment About Hurricane Sandy

One can imagine what the firestorm from the Left would be if a FOX host said the same thing after a Romney win. But no, a liberal, race-card playing Obama hack said it and for that he should lose his job:

Media Bias: An MSNBC commentator says he's "glad" that Hurricane Sandy hit when it did because it led to the re-election of Barack Obama. This is a fine example of what's wrong with today's press.

Early Wednesday morning, apparently kept awake by the Obama thrill running up his leg, Chris Matthews added to his Biden-like collection of spoken inanities, telling the world, "I'm so glad we had that storm last week" because it "brought in possibilities for good politics."

He tried to qualify his statement, saying that he meant "not in terms of hurting people."

But the explanation came too late and had little substance. Had the storm not hurt anyone, it would have been a nonfactor. Only in its viciousness did Sandy have an impact.

Matthews' comment is childish and reprehensible. But it won't get him fired. Neither MSNBC bosses nor the legacy media will find fault with it.

What are more than 100 deaths, displaced lives and billions in damage to them as long as the disaster helps push their candidate over the finish line?

Imagine a Fox News commentator cheering a storm that helped elect Mitt Romney. Or a conservative pundit expressing delight in the deaths of four Americans in Benghazi because they precluded Obama's re-election. He or she would be run out of town. And rightfully so.

Matthews' win-it-for-the-Democrats-at-any-cost approach to journalism has become the staple of a corrupt media. Matthews is an opinion maker who is free to exercise bias in his work (though he should avoid celebrating deadly hurricanes).

But the press is overflowing with straight news reporters and editors who let their left-wing bias bleed all over their product.

Consider that the mainstream media virtually ignored the weighty questions about the Benghazi attack and has continued to look away from what should be an absorbing Fast and Furious scandal.

The press has also failed to look at Obama's role in our sluggish economy, the widespread joblessness and our lack of optimism. It hasn't been remotely curious about the problems that ObamaCare will create. Nor has it bothered to take a hard look at Obama's background.

But that's how today's media operate. It's become a venal institution, the Democrats' poodle rather than a political watchdog.

The gaffe-master that noted race-baiter Chris Matthews recently begged the Obama campaign to "unleash", proves once again why he's the biggest ass-clown to ever hold down the VP spot:

Vice President Joe Biden is once again proving to be a great asset to the Republicans.

First there was his ‘”put y’all back in chains” remark, which led to Republicans joking that he should attend the Republican National Convention and campaign on their behalf.

Now, the Romney-Ryan ticket is thanking the Vice President for making their point about the middle class.

At an event in Charlotte, N.C. yesterday, Biden questioned how Republican presidential nominee could justify raising taxes on the middle class that is suffering:

“This is deadly earnest, man. This is deadly earnest. How can they justify raising taxes on the middle class that’s been buried the last four years? How in the Lord’s name can they justify raising their taxes with these tax cuts?”

It did not escape the Republicans that Biden had limited that statement to the last four years, an error that he corrected at a later campaign stop by saying that the last four years were a consequence of President Bush’s policies ” that Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney supported.”

While Biden was working on dialing back his misstep, Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan used Biden’s statement to his advantage. “Vice President Biden, just today, said that the middle class, over the last four years, has been buried. We agree. That means we need to stop digging by electing Mitt Romney the next President of the United States,” he told the crowd in Burlington, Iowa.

Day before, Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney tweeted: “Another term for @BarackObama will only bring more of the same policies that have devastated the middle class.” Biden’s comment played right into this rhetoric and the campaign didn’t hesitate to tweet that they agree with the current Vice President.

Reince Priebus Calls Obama Stan Chris Matthews ‘The Biggest Jerk In The Room’

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus was on the receiving end of thurough grilling from MSNBC host Chris Matthews while the two appeared on Monday’s Morning Joe. Matthews accused Priebus, his party and their presidential nominee of knowingly employing coded racism in their campaign against President Barack Obama. Priebus kept his cool during that segment, but in an interview with National Review’s Jim Geraghty, the RNC chairman responded to Matthews by calling him “the biggest jerk in the room.”

Priebus responded to criticism that he was too deferential to Matthews while his party and their presidential nominee were being defamed on cable news. Priebus replied to that charge saying that, when someone is being “the biggest jerk,” it is sometimes best to “just let them go.”

When someone wants to grab the flag and try to be the biggest jerk in the room, sometimes you just let them go…. We shook hands, but I will tell ya that someone from MSNBC, I don’t know if it’s a producer or somebody, has been trying to call us all day – I’m sure it’s to make amends, but there’s nothing to make amends [about]. When somebody wants to take the prize of being the biggest jerk in the room… I mean, he made the case for us. This is the Barack Obama surrogate of 2012. This is what they’re all about. They’re going to be about division, they’re going to be about distraction. And I’ve got to tell you, the brand of Barack Obama, hope and change and bringing us all together, it’s completely broken. When people come to realize that you’re not real anymore, you’re not who you said you were, that’s a big problem for Barack Obama.

Asked if he would go on MSNBC again, he said, “I’m happy to go on MSNBC. Joe and Mika, they weren’t too happy about it. The feeling in the room was clearly there was a lot of happiness directed at Chris. I don’t really care. If more than 10 people actually watched his show, I would actually care, but they don’t, so, whatever.

Fox News Watch Marvel At Media’s Promotion Of Justice Roberts From ‘Right Wing Goon’ To ‘Hero’

By far the biggest story of this week was the Supreme Court’s ruling upholding the constitutionality of fining individuals for not having health insurance, a move that Justice John Roberts wrote fell under the taxing authority of Congress. On Fox News Watch today, the panel noted that his decision to side with the more liberal justices appeared to change the tone of liberals in the media when referring to him, who now saw him as a “hero” for what he wrote.


Jim Pinkerton joked that the turnabout by the media in warming up to Justice Roberts had been dubbed by “some wiseguy in DC” the “Greenhouse Effect”– namely, Linda Greenhouse, whose writing “moved the courts in her direction.” He also joked that a week ago, Justice Roberts was a “right-wing goon,” to which host Jon Scott interjected to point out how Chris Matthews reacted– going from claiming Justice Roberts could be “compared to a Civil War-era supreme court judge who upheld the Dred Scott Slave Act” to “a hero.”


“Here the bias is so obvious,” Judith Miller replied, noting that at least the “legal media see his reasoning as specious and his about-face as, well, an about-face.” Kirsten Powers, on the other hand, took a look at the way conservative media reacted– namely, “very, very angry.” he agreed it was “historic” and “a big victory for Obama,” but didn’t see Justice Roberts as siding with conservatives, given that “his reasoning was completely different than theirs.” Richard Grenell agreed, explaining that Justice Roberts had now “saddled ‘the President’ with a terrible scalet T… he has to go into the campaign season with the label of a taxer.”


As for Mitt Romney and the election, Miller expressed some surprise that Romney had not “taken advantage of the moment,” though “he did talk about the elements that he would have in his plan.” Pinkerton thought the President was not in the best position given the decision. People “oppose Obamacare as a thing, and if he spends the next five months defending it, that’s a bad thing,” he concluded.

PolitiFact Nails Chris Matthews For Misrepresenting Florida Voter Registration Law

PolitiFact took MSNBC host Chris Matthews to task for a claim he made on his program last week where he criticized a 2011 Florida law that imposes a 48-hour deadline on new voter registration groups. “The 48-hour rule basically makes it impossible to meet the deadline if you’re working right to the end of the week,” said Matthews. PolitiFact rated this claim as “false”

In a June 4 interview with the Florida Republican party Chairman Lenny Curry, Matthews accused Curry and his party of instituting voter registration laws that intentionally restrict voter’s abilities to register. 

On his program, Matthews read from a Florida judge’s ruling on the law: “if the goal is to discourage voter registration drives, and thus also to make it harder for new voters to register, this may work,” Matthews read.

“Lenny Curry, you’re the chair of the Republican Party down there. Was the intention to suppress the vote down there, as Judith says, or it had some other purpose,” Matthews asked. “Why would you set a requirement you got to get your petitions in, in 48 hours? Why did you set such a requirement and a law?”

Curry responded in the negative and said that, in his view, such a deadline was reasonable. Matthews disagreed:

“Well, wait a minute. I’m going to call you there because everybody watching can figure this one out. If I’m working in front of a Safeway somewhere and I’m collecting registrations — I’m registering people who aren’t registered — and it’s Friday afternoon at 5:00 p.m., I can’t even technically turn those in until Monday. That means it’s already elapsed, the 48 hours.

“So, under the law, nothing I get done late Friday afternoon is of any value and probably some of the stuff early Saturday morning. The 48-hour rule basically makes it impossible to meet the deadline if you’re working right to the end of the week, right, Lenny?”

“You don’t have to be a lawyer to own a calendar or know what a weekend is,” Matthews continued. “A weekend is 48 hours.”

Matthews ended the interview by suggesting that he would take Curry to minority neighborhoods in the city of Philadelphia to participate in securing voter identification. “I could take you to some interesting neighborhoods, buddy,” said Matthews. 

PolitiFact took issue with Matthews claim that voter registration organizations would be unable to process new voters if they turned their petitions in on a Friday:

There’s no doubt the deadlines were deterring groups from going out to register voters. After the law’s passage, the League of Women Voters said they wouldn’t conduct their usual voter registration drives because the new requirements were too difficult to meet.

But Matthews said that Florida’s 2011 voting law made it impossible for third-party groups to register voters on Friday afternoon, because a 48-hour deadline to turn in those applications would expire before the elections office opens Monday morning.

That’s not correct. The law factored in weekends and holidays and gave voter registration groups until the next business day. We rate Matthews’ claim False.

You have to endure that while he has to endure occasional “leg tingles” jokes. And meanwhile, the rap sheet for MSNBC’s darlings in OWS gets longer and longer and longer. We all love America in different ways, I guess.
