Marco Rubio: Budget Deal Fails to Stop Washington Spending Problems

Throughout our history, America has been a place where if you work hard and play by the rules, you can go as far as your God-given talents will take you. Those sacrifices help pave the way for your children and grandchildren to go even further.

This is the American Dream as we know it. It’s not an abstract goal, but an achievable way of life that is ours to protect and pass on to future generations.

Many Americans today are deeply worried that all this is changing for good – but not in a good way. This concern stems from the belief that the American Dream is slipping away and, with it, the chance to give our children and grandchildren a shot at an even better life.

Especially over the last five years, we have been told that a bigger and more powerful federal government is the way to fix this. But it has not. Instead, it has left us with a $17 trillion national debt and 20 million people out of work. It has left us with taxes that are too high and regulations that are too complicated. And it has left us with a government too broken to function and families that are falling apart because our government undermines the values of hard work, discipline, honesty and self-control.

We should never accept this as the new normal. We can reverse the insecurity, the lack of opportunity and the anxiety about the future. We can restore the American Dream.

Of course, these worries won't disappear overnight, with one speech or with one budget. But every day is filled with new opportunities to take some steps in the right direction.

Unfortunately, the House-Senate budget deal announced this week fails to take any meaningful steps to achieve a government with less debt and an economy with more good paying jobs. Not achieving these goals means it will continue to be harder for more Americans to achieve the American Dream.

This budget continues Washington’s irresponsible budgeting decisions by spending more money than the government takes in and placing additional financial burdens on everyday Americans. These burdens primarily come in the form of higher taxes disguised as fee increases, particularly on air travelers. Although user fees must sometimes be reevaluated to help pay for the rising costs of providing a government service, this budget deal's fee increases are simply designed to generate more revenues for government and to pay for unrelated increased spending on government programs.

In the short run, this budget also cancels earlier spending reductions that came about through the so-called sequester of 2011 in exchange for future promises of other spending reductions many years from now.  In other words, we have a government that’s $17 trillion in debt, which had to borrow an additional $680 billion this year to fund its annual deficit, yet this budget deal actually increases spending by $63 billion over the next two years, supposedly for spending cuts to be named later.

In 2011, I voted against the deal that included sequestration because it involved raising the debt ceiling without any meaningful spending reforms. But I have also been concerned about the deal's impact on key defense programs – cuts that imperil our security simply because Washington politicians refuse to set priorities and cut out wasteful spending. The American people should not be asked to choose between a strong military and responsible budgets that encourage job creation and reduce debt.

Instead of setting priorities based on the limited role government should be playing in our lives, this budget deal calls for higher spending and more revenue to feed a larger government. This is not a solution; it's an exacerbation of Washington's spending problem.

Pro-Life Group’s Ad Rejected By Major Newspapers, Image of Baby “Too Controversial”

A national pro-life organization is outraged after three major American newspapers rejected a pro-life ad as “too controversial.”

The Chicago Tribune, USA Today, and the LA Times refused to run an advertisement created by Heroic Media.

The ad features a hand holding a 20- to 24-week-old baby with the quote, “This child has no voice, which is why it depends on yours. Speak Up.”

Heroic Media Executive Director Joe Young said he was shocked and angered that the media outlets were willing to talk about the issue but were unwilling to show the reality of life at 20 weeks.

“I am disturbed that these papers would run article after article promoting the notion that abortion is a victimless act without consequences,” Young said. “The fact remains, children who are unique individuals – never again to be duplicated – are being killed in the most violent way imaginable and they feel the excruciating pain of that death.”

The newspapers took issue with the image of the baby.

“It seems as though it is okay to talk about the issue in general, but when you actually put a face to the discussion, then it becomes controversial,” Young said.

Last week after the House passed the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, Heroic Media put out a statement requesting that the pro-life community contact their senators and encourage them to consider and support the Act.

“Americans deserve to know the truth about the children sentenced to die for no fault of their own and that we have a chance to spare some of them through this legislation,” Young said.

The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act prevents an abortionist from performing an abortion at or after 20 weeks, based on empirical scientific medical evidence that proves that unborn babies can feel pain.

Science shows that at eight weeks after fertilization, the unborn child reacts to touch, and at 20 weeks, the unborn baby responds to what would be felt as pain.

The image shows a 20- to 24-week-old baby in a person’s hands. Heroic Media’s goal was to show what life looks like at 20 weeks. The non-profit organization has resubmitted the ad with a different image, now one of a 20-week-old baby in utero.

The Chicago Tribune has now agreed to run the ad with the second image as long as Heroic Media indicates that it is an advertisement.

“Our hope is that the American public begins to advance this debate with both the mother and child in mind,” Young said.

Heroic Media is a non-profit whose mission is to educate the public in general and reach women facing unplanned pregnancies with life-affirming alternatives through the use of mass media, such as television commercials, internet outreach, and billboards.

Tensions in Texas ratcheted a bit higher Tuesday as activists on both sides of the abortion issue squared off at the  Capitol in Austin for a somewhat odd religious-themed shout-down.

Gov. Rick Perry has called for a second special session to pass an abortion law that would prohibit the procedure past the 20th week of pregnancy.

Pro-choice protesters shouted, “Hail Satan!” as an attempt to drown out pro-lifers’ rendition of “Amazing Grace.”

A Texas blogger, Adam Cahm, captured the scene on video: “It’s been a very interesting day at the Texas State Capitol. … LetTexasSpeak has been doing a live broadcast from the rotunda where women have been sharing their abortion related testimonies. The pro-abortion crowd has responded with repeated chants of ‘hail Satan.’ It’s taken us all day to get a video recording,” The Blaze reported.

Eighty-three percent of American physicians have considered leaving the profession over President Barack Obama’s healthcare reform law – and 63 percent have called for repealing all or part of it, according to survey by the Doctor Patient Medical Association.

The results from the non-partisan association of doctors and patients, founded last fall and headquartered in Alexandria, Va., is based on a national survey of 699 physicians, the Daily Caller reports.

The Affordable Care Act was upheld last month by the U.S. Supreme Court.

By 2020, the U.S. is expected to face a shortage of at least 90,000 doctors. Because the new healthcare law expands insurance coverage, it will increase physician demand.

“Hands-down, doctors blame government involvement for the current problems in medicine, and are not shy to say they want it out,” the association says in a report on the survey findings.

“The reasons cited range from the deluge of regulatory compliance that siphons time away from patient care, to de facto rationing achieved through complex payment schemes, to cushy relationships that favor corporations and special interests in medicine.”

The DPMA found that many doctors just don't believe the legislation will give more Americans quality care, co-founder of the DPMA Kathryn Serkes said.

“Doctors clearly understand what Washington does not — that a piece of paper that says you are ‘covered’ by insurance or ‘enrolled’ in Medicare or Medicaid does not translate to actual medical care when doctors can’t afford to see patients at the lowball payments, and patients have to jump through government and insurance company bureaucratic hoops,” she said

As for Obamacare specifically, the association said: “Doctors say that a key government provision in the Affordable Care Act, the huge expansion of Medicaid enrollees, is likely to backfire, as 49 percent say they will stop accepting Medicaid payments.”

Mitt Romney: Actually, We're Absolutely Vetting Marco Rubio

"There was a story that originated today apparently at ABC based upon reports of supposedly outside unnamed advisers of mine," Romney said in Holland, Michigan. "I can't imagine who such people are. But I can tell you this: they know nothing about the vice presidential selection or evaluation process. There are only two people in this country who know who are being vetted and who are not: And that's Beth myers and myself. And I know Beth well. She doesn't talk to anybody. The story was entirely false. Marco Rubio is being thoroughly vetted as part of our process."

But wait, ABC's Jonathan Karl stands by his initial report:

First, I stand by my reporting. As of 9 a.m. this morning, Marco Rubio had not been asked by the Romney campaign to turn over any documents related to the vice presidential search. He had not been asked to fill out any questionnaires. If Romney was “thoroughly vetting” Rubio, he was doing it without Rubio’s knowledge. Now, however, Marco Rubio is the one candidate who the world knows definitively is being vetted. Why? It’s possible that Romney simply had not gotten around to asking Rubio for vetting materials, but his search process has been under way for more than two months.

But there’s also this: immediately after our report aired, conservatives started complaining directly to the Romney campaign that they were making a mistake by not considering Rubio. I am told by several Republican sources that Romney came under intense pressure today from top Republicans who argued it was crazy to take Rubio out of consideration so early. Some argued for Rubio’s appeal as the party’s most effective and charismatic conservative voice. Some argued it is dumb politics to not consider the party’s top Hispanic conservative. It seems Romney, at least now, agrees.

Marco Rubio Calls 1st Gay President Barack Obama Most "Divisive" And "Destructive" Political Figure He's Ever Seen

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio condemned President Barack Obama on Saturday in unusually harsh terms, calling him one the most “divisive” and “destructive” political figures the country has ever seen. 

“For all the policy disagreements that we have with our president, it is hard to understate how much he inspired people across this country four years ago,” Rubio said at a fundraising dinner for South Carolina Republicans.

The man who currently occupies the White House, he explained, “is a very different person.”

“We have not seen such a divisive figure in modern American history as we have over the last three and a half years,” Rubio said.

“They get frustrated,” he said. “They can’t win on their record. And so they have chosen to go down a different road, one that I think is destructive, counterproductive and very unfortunate.”

He accused the Obama campaign of attempting to “pit Americans against each other” by engaging in class warfare and unfairly attacking Republicans on gender issues.

“Never have we seen such an effort to divide the American people in an effort to win an election as we have today,” Rubio said.

Rubio was addressing roughly 1,200 attendees at the South Carolina Republican Party’s Silver Elephant Banquet, the state party’s largest fundraiser of the year.

The speech raised $300,000 for the party.

Having long been a fan of Huckabee I'm mad at myself for not thinking of this earlier. After all, as a former governor Huckabee has the executive experience, he's a great orator who'd easily beat Biden in a debate, he's likeable, definitely appealing to the Christian right and even the Tea Party crowd. Plus, I agree with Ann Coulter when she said that picking Marco Rubio would just be "pandering to Hispanics" and while Paul Ryan could certainly be a great VP, he's too young and lacks the experience. The Huckster, if he accepted the offer, could take Romney over the top:

It is very likely that Mitt Romney will become the GOP nominee and while he’s done it without courting evangelicals he’s going to need them in the fall to pull off a General Election victory. A standard turnout by evangelicals will not do the trick, not with a veteran, well-oiled Obama campaign machine ready to go. He’s going to need a game changing Vice-Presidential pick to energize evangelicals. Who might that be? Mike Huckabee would most definitely be the guy to seal the deal. He's probably the one guy who could truly get evangelicals off the couch who are skeptical of Romney.


Think about it for a moment. While the two were rivals in 2008, time heals all wounds right? Huckabee would help Romney immensely with the evangelical vote, the tea party vote and those white middle class voters. It could be a perfect fit not to mention that Huckabee has great interpersonal communication skills, something Romney lacks. He also would fit the criteria of someone who could step in and be president. Plus, the national media has vetted him already so that takes away any surprises and new narratives about someone new to the national stage. And while the VP is traditionally put in the role of attack dog, Huckabee has a knack for attacking yet not looking vicious when he does it. It’s an artful skill that he clearly learned in the Deep South where you might criticize someone but it goes down gently (“That dress just doesn’t look good on you, bless your heart!”). You can make the argument that Huckabee is making a lot of money and is enjoying his role as a media personality. All of that is true but if Romney came calling it would be pretty hard to turn down a VP offer.


Political observers always talk about how elections are won in the middle with Independent voters. Huckabee can appeal to these voters but his true value will be to energize evangelicals. You can bet without a shadow of a doubt that a Huckabee VP pick would do wonders for Romney with the evangelical base. The Romney campaign would be ignorant at best and politically suicidal at worst to think that evangelicals are just going to show up and vote for Romney in the fall because they have nowhere else to go. Many of them will do so but they might not bring a friend and certainly won’t organize with full abandon. That’s a problem for Romney in an election that will probably be very close. Huckabee could seal the deal like no other politician in the country.

Manuel Roig-Franzia is a reporter for the Washington Post who once got punched by his 70 year old editor, Henry Allen, for writing “the second worst story [Allen had] seen in Style in 43 years.” That’s right, Roig-Franzia wrote a horrible piece in the Style section. His 70 year old editor did not like it. Roig-Franzia reportedly called his 70 year old editor and Marine a “c**ksucker”, and the Marine punched him.


Manuel Roig-Franzia has a well documented history of being an apologist for the Cuban communist regime and a hater of the Catholic church. He is also now writing a book on Marco Rubio.


We can get a sense of the book by his stunning hit job on Marco Rubio in the Washington Post.. Roig-Franzia claims Rubio has embellished his “compelling version of his family’s history that had special resonance in South Florida.” Again, keep in mind that Roig-Franzia is an apologist for the Cuban communist regime.


Roig-Franzia writes, “a review of documents — including naturalization papers and other official records — reveals that the Florida Republican’s account embellishes the facts. The documents show that Rubio’s parents came to the United States and were admitted for permanent residence more than 21 / 2 years before Castro’s forces overthrew the Cuban government and took power on New Year’s Day 1959.”


Now, there are two problems for Roig-Franzia. First, the communist apologist failed to actually quote Marco Rubio embellishing his story. The Miami Herald really destroys the piece.


The Washington Post just released this interesting story headlined “Marco Rubio’s compelling family story embellishes facts, documents show.” The paper flagged a clear inaccuracy in his official Senate biography that states the Senator’s parents “came to America following Fidel Castro’s takeover.”


That’s false. Rubio’s parents came to the US before then, in 1956. They remained in the US after Castro took over in 1959. They returned to Cuba for brief stints early on, before the country devolved into Soviet-style totalitarianism.


But the top of the story suggests Rubio himself has given this “dramatatic account:” that “he was the son of exiles, he told audiences, Cuban Americans forced off their beloved island after ‘a thug,’ Fidel Castro, took power.”


However, the story doesn’t cite one speech where Rubio actually said that.


To back up the lead, the Washington Post excerpts from a 2006 address in the Florida House where Rubio said “in January of 1959 a thug named Fidel Castro took power in Cuba and countless Cubans were forced to flee… Today your children and grandchildren are the secretary of commerce of the United States and multiple members of Congress…and soon, even speaker of the Florida House.”


The catch: If you listen to the speech, Rubio isn’t just talking about those who specifically fled Cuba after Castro took power. He doesn’t say that his parents fled Cuba. Instead, he was talking about “a community of exiles.” That is: He was talking about all the Cubans who live in Mia


What’s more, Manuel Roig-Franzia does not say how he came to know these facts about Marco Rubio. But Gabriel Malor knows.


Rubio has been hounded since he rose to prominence by birthers intent on sabotaging any further rise he might have in politics. Malor notes, “Birthers intent on somehow proving that he’s not a “natural-born citizen” dug up his parents’ adjustment and naturalization paperwork. That’s where WaPo got the dates for his parents’ arrival to the United States.”


That’s right boys and girls. Manuel Roig-Franzia, who was once punched by a 70 year old for atrocious writing in a freaking style section, uses a Birther originated attack to discredit Marco Rubio and can’t even offer up a quote from Rubio.


And you know what? Even if he could offer up a quote, does it matter? How many of you know the full and accurate story of your parents and grandparents?

GOP Needs More Of Marco Rubio

Easily one of the best performances by a Republican talking to a liberal pundit in quite awhile. Rubio is good-looking, articulate and knows how to take down liberal talking points--in other words we need more of him and the GOP should make sure that happens.

Democrats can’t win on the issues, so they resort to class and racial politics, says Marco Rubio, the GOP’s presumptive nominee for U.S. Senate from Florida.

During an exclusive Newsmax interview, Rubio upbraided Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., for his recent comment that he does not “know how anyone of Hispanic heritage could be a Republican.”

“It’s part of a concerted effort to get away from the issues and get into identity politics because they can’t win on the issues,” says Rubio, whose parents and grandparents came to the United States from Cuba. “So they want things to be about things like class warfare and identity politics."
