MSNBC’s Most Embarrassing Mockery of Mitt Romney’s Russia Warnings

The smug self-assuredness that often suffices for expertise on cable news was perhaps never more smug than when former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney warned the American public that Russia was rapidly positioning itself as America’s “number one geopolitical foe.” Among the worst offenders were the hosts and guests who provide MSNBC with content on a daily basis. 

In early 2012, President Barack Obama was caught on an open microphone telling Russia’s then-President Dmitry Medvedev that he would have more “flexibility” after the presidential election in his dealings with Russia. Romney reacted strongly to that comment. Appearing on CNN, the GOP nominee said that the United States should regard Russia as a geopolitical adversary and should work to limit Russia’s flexibility rather than to secure it. His observation was soundly criticized by the president’s defenders who, at the time, were still attempting to rehabilitate Obama’s floundering “Reset” with Russia. 

There were few who defended Romney’s comments. Even snake-bit Republicans, chastened by the swift backlash in the media, hedged when asked to back up Romney’s assessment of the challenges posed by Moscow. But MSNBC’s wagons circled particularly quickly in defense of the president. Volley after volley of snark was lobbed in the GOP nominee’s direction.

“I don’t know what decade this guy’s living in,” MSNBC host Chris Matthews said with a sigh on March 28, 2012. “Is he trying to play Ronald Reagan here, or what?”

“This is Mitt Romney’s severely conservative problem,” University of Georgia professor Cynthia Tucker opined on-the-air. “It made Romney look dumb. He’s not a dumb man, but he said something that was clearly dumb.”

Huffington Post reporter Sam Stein agreed that Romney’s statement was evidence of an “antiquated worldview.” He fretted further about how Romney, should he become president, would enter the office having severely complicated America’s bilateral relations with Moscow given his carelessly provocative statement. 

“I personally am worried about what it says to the Russian people,” Matthews added to a chorus of sagely nods.

MSNBC hosts Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O’Donnell got in on the self-satisfied ridicule, too. 

 Promoting Maddow’s latest book about the “unmooring of American military power,” O’Donnell asked the flagship MSNBC host if Romney was merely reflecting on what he might have read in that book. 

“He read about Reagan’s private, outside-the-CIA cabal of team-B zealots who were telling him that Russia had all the stuff they didn’t have so he could justify a giant defense budget,” Maddow submitted scornfully. 

“It is amazing that Mitt Romney can flip like that just as soon as he hears something to exploit in foreign policy,” O’Donnell remarked.

Maddow took her observations about Romney’s position on Russia one ill-advised step further on her MSNBC.com blog:

I can appreciate why the Romney campaign would try to make Obama’s “hot mic” story interesting, but the problem is the former governor just doesn’t have any real policy chops in this area. He’s out of his depth, and struggles when the subject takes center stage.
It’s not just that Romney is uninformed; it’s that he hasn’t figured out how to fake it.

Appearing on Andrea Mitchell Reports in April of that year, Romney surrogate and former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour was confronted by the MSNBC anchor. Calling Romney’s comments “a throwback to the Cold War,” Mitchell insisted that “we work with Russia all the time.” “Hardly an ally but certainly not an adversary,” she declared.

But the worst offender was one who should have, and likely did, know better, former Secretary of State Colin Powell. The former Army general greatly entertained his MSNBC hosts with some of the most snide commentary about Romney’s observation. 

“Come on, Mitt. Think,” Powell said of Romney’s remark in May to the chuckles of host Joe Scarborough. “That isn’t the case.” 

He went on to suggest that Romney’s assessment of the threat posed by Russia was so dubious that it was possible he was being disingenuous or he was coached to make that statement.

Jan Brewer Vetos Religious Freedom SB1062 Bill and Caves To Godless, White Liberals

Is it any wonder so many social conservatives in this country have lost faith in the Republican party? With losers like John McCain, Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich and the 3 Arizona Republican members who caved to liberal lies and hyperbole on SB1062 and changed their mind, who needs the GOP?

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer made a statement Wednesday night declaring she already vetoed the controversial SB1062 bill that would permit state businesses to discriminate against LGBT individuals, confirming an earlier report that she was planning to veto the bill.

Advocates of the bill have argued that the bill was meant to protect people’s religious liberty, while opponents insisted it’s just the government adding on another layer of discrimination that gay people have to face in their lives.

Brewer previously pledged she would “do the right thing for Arizona,” and deferred questions by saying she had until Friday to make her decision. The Arizona Chamber of Commerce came out against the bill, as did many businesses (Apple and Marriott among them), and a number of high-profile Republicans, including both of Arizona’s GOP senators, called on Brewer to veto the bill.

CBO Says Obamacare Will Push 2 Million Workers out of Labor Market

What Mitt Romney warned us about:

Obamacare will push the equivalent of about 2 million workers out of the labor market by 2017 as employees decide either to work fewer hours or drop out of the job market altogether, according to estimates released Tuesday by the Congressional Budget Office.

The analysis set off a furious debate in Washington. The White House argued that the reduction is positive because it means Americans will forgo jobs or extra work to stay home with their children or strike out on their own as entrepreneurs. Republicans, however, said the report amounted to an “I told you so” moment and that subtracting the equivalent of 2 million workers can’t be good for the economy.

The CBO said the number of workers dropping out of the labor force will grow from 2 million in 2017 to 2.5 million by 2024.

Although part of those numbers are attributed to job cuts, the vast majority represent workers who decide it makes more sense to stay home or work fewer hours, weighing the higher taxes they pay in the workforce versus their qualifications for benefits if they drop out.

“CBO estimates that the ACA will reduce the total number of hours worked, on net, by about 1.5 to 2 percent during the period from 2017 to 2024, almost entirely because workers will choose to supply less labor — given the new taxes and other incentives they will face and the financial benefits some will receive,” the nonpartisan tax agency said in its economic outlook.

Does MSNBC’s ‘Culture’ Encourage ‘Harsh Personal Attacks’?

For his latest column on FoxNews.com, MediaBuzz host Howard Kurtz examines the “culture” over at competitor MSNBC that he suggests may have “encouraged” the comments about Sarah Palin that got Martin Bashir fired as well as the more recent controversial segment about Mitt Romney’s black grandson on Melissa Harris-Perry’s weekend show. “Is there something in the water over at 30 Rock?” he asks. 

Kurtz prefaces his argument with a disclaimer of sorts: “First, this is not some sort of Fox attack on MSNBC.” He explains that unlike some of his more partisan colleagues at Fox, he has “friendly relations with a number of people who work there,” thinks the network is good at “dealing with policy issues in more than short sound bites” and maintains that MSNBC President Phil Griffin “has every right to position his outfit as a liberal network.” 

“But has the channel developed a culture in which harsh personal attacks are encouraged, or at least tolerated?” he asks. Seeing a broader theme in instances like the ones involving Bashir and Harris-Perry, Kurtz says MSNBC appears to hold “a view of Republicans and conservatives as so mean-spirited, hard-hearted and clueless that just about any rhetoric against them can be justified.”

While he acknowledges that Fox is not immune to personal attacks, and suspects “some folks are at this moment scrambling to dig up incendiary comments made on Fox,” he claims it’s not on the same level as MSNBC. “Not since Glenn Beck was branding Barack Obama a ‘racist’ with a ‘deep-seated hatred’ of white people has anything been at the Bashir level,” he writes, “and that was five years ago.”

CNN’s Don Lemon Tears into ‘Smug,’ ‘Mean’ MSNBC over Mitt Romney Grandson Segment

CNN anchor Don Lemon had some tough words for his competitors at MSNBC Monday night during a discussion about Melissa Harris-Perry and her panel poking fun at a crowded Mitt Romney family photo with his young black grandson. Lemon used the opportunity to vent about the liberal network, calling it “smug” and unwilling to entertain actual diversity of opinion.

Republican Ana Navarro agreed with Lemon that it was in bad taste to use the child to mock the Romneys, but Marc Lamont Hill argued that they didn’t actually make fun of the baby itself, just used it to make a point about diversity in the Romney family and the GOP.

Lemon wondered if Hill would react the same way if the same segment aired on Fox. Navarro predicted, “By now, Jesse Jackson would be protesting and tied to a tree somewhere.”

Lemon then took on the “crowd” at MSNBC that’s given him lots of flak for comments he’s made on issues of race specifically. Lemon explained he’s never bothered responding because “dogs are supposed to howl at the moon, the moon doesn’t howl back.” He called MSNBC a “smug” club where despite touting diversity, there is “no diversity of opinion” on the network.

Hill agreed that “pockets” of MSNBC are “smug and condescending,” but Lemon continued on to dismiss the network as an insular den of liberalism where people are “saying mean, smug things about people who… may disagree with them.”

Stupid, Race-Baiting, MSNBC Host Melissa Harris-Perry Says “ObamaCare” Was a Word Coined by Wealthy White Men to Diminish Obama’s Accomplishments

Right. And "Bush Tax Cuts" and "RomneyCare" were terms coined by poor, black people to diminish George W. Bush and Mitt Romney's accomplishments. In other words, Melissa Harris-Perry is a total idiot:

America II, as anyone who watches the channel will discover rather swiftly, hosts a supermajority of well-meaning multi-culti, progressive types whose foolproof plans for explosive economic growth, uniform social justice, and general human utopia are constantly being undone by a blossoming white-supremacist movement, split apart by neo-secessionists, and existentially threatened by traitors whose defining characteristic is a never-quite-explained hatred for progress. America II features no gray areas whatsoever: All local variation is apartheid, each and every identification requirement is the second coming of Jim Crow, all criticism of the government is sedition. On a network where smirking references to “teabaggers” are treated as witty, Harris-Perry’s attempt to rehabilitate “ObamaCare” as some sort of slur practically qualifies as clever. How to square the fact that O himself now uses the term with the quasi-religious belief that any Republican messaging about him, no matter how innocuous and easily explained by basic partisanship, must be proof of racism in America II? Simple: Claim that “ObamaCare” was a slur, but now, by embracing the word himself, Obama’s taken the power back. If you find that unpersuasive, remember, decoding conservative criticism of O for alleged racial subtexts is a sort of parlor game on MSNBC. Previously identified dog-whistles include “IRS,” “Chicago,” and my favorite, “golf.” Usually the game ends with some variation of “and that’s why it’s racist,” but MHP’s argument has a whole second part to it. Consider this bar raised.

Legal Insurrection has a nice post tracking the origins of the word “ObamaCare,” including a claim from none other than Anthony Weiner that he coined the term himself. Which, if true, partially vindicates Harris-Perry: A wealthy white man really is responsible. By the way, as I write this, there are roughly 575,000 results for “RomneyCare” on Google. On this site alone, that word appears in more than 250 posts.

Actress Melissa Joan Hart Says People Wished Her Death Because She Voted For Mitt Romney

Melissa Joan Hart was a hot topic on talk radio this week after she revealed in a Wednesday interview with the Huffington Post the extent of the vitriol she encountered when she proclaimed last year she was voting for Mitt Romney over President Barack Obama.

"Can't get too political in only 140 chac but for those asking, I'm voting #RomneyRyan," Hart tweeted a year ago.
After the tweet, "I got called every name in the book," Hart said on HuffPost Live, an Internet show. Video of the episode is below.

She said some people said "they hope I die, and that they hope my children are gay, which was somehow supposed to be a sort of punishment. … The hate was really unbelievable."

She said her tweet was meant to encourage participation in the election. "As a [member of the] Rock the Vote generation, I was told my vote counted, and I had to get out and do that," she said.

In response to Twitter followers who were asking about the upcoming election a year ago, she said: "The night before the election, I said I'm voting Romney … all of a sudden I was the devil."

Hart is best-known for her role as Sabrina on Sabrina, the Teenage Witch from 1996 to 2003, and currently stars on Melissa & Joey on ABC Family. She has been promoting her book, Melissa Explains It All, on various outlets lately. On Friday, the KABC radio morning crew in Los Angeles dedicated a segment to her HuffPo comments.

Hart, in fact, has been asked before about reaction to her tweet. Speaking to Sean Hannity on Fox News, she accused Hollywood of intolerance toward nonliberals. "It is like a blacklist. It's a little scary," she said.
Hart is one of many who have leveled such charges. James Woods recently received a lot of attention by tweeting that he didn't expect to work in Hollywood again because he is critical of Obama.

Clint Howard, an actor since 1961 and younger brother of filmmaker Ron Howard, warned conservatives in Hollywood to "be careful" during a Republican event two years ago. "I came out of the closet. In Hollywood, I certainly understand that's dangerous," he said.

At the same event, Morgan Brittany recalled how "everybody" bashed President Ronald Reagan when she was on the 1980s hit TV show Dallas. "I never said anything because I thought I'd lose my job," she said. "I got to a point later on, after Dallas was over and I had my two children, that I said, 'Enough is enough. I'm not going to be silent any longer.' "

The Obama campaign and cable "news" network MSNBC shared more than a mere slogan this presidential cycle.  Neither entity had a single negative thing to say about the incumbent president over the closing week of the campaign.  By definition, it was Team Obama's job to portray the president in a unflinchingly favorable light -- but what exactly is the NBC-owned channel's mission statement?  Fox News is often accused of being a little more than a right-wing spin machine, particularly during its opinion programming.  Fox's overall coverage of the campaign tilted heavily in favor of Mitt Romney during the home stretch, with some "fair and balanced" negative coverage of the Republican and positive reporting about the president sprinkled in for good measure.  MSNBC went the full Pravda.  Via Pew Research:

Not a single MSNBC story about Mitt Romney was positive -- not one.  Meanwhile, zero segments about the president were negative. Allahpundit reaches into the word bag and grabs an entirely appropriate description of Pew's data reflected graph above: "Indistinguishable from propaganda."  He also notes that the Benghazi controversy was in full swing over this time period, indicating that MSNBC couldn't find anything critical to say about the Obama administration, even regarding its disgraceful handling of a preventable terrorist attack that claimed the lives of four American diplomats.  As I reported yesterday, the MSNBC crew is now accusing critics on this front of engaging in "conspiracy" theorizing.  In short, the network has essentially given up trying to even pretend to anything other than a house organ of the professional left.  At what point are they no longer considered a news outlet?  I'll leave you with this chart from Pew, demonstrating that overall media coverage of Barack Obama and Mitt Romney moved in opposite directions in the week directly preceding the election.  Surprise:

What's more, Obama received substantially more coverage than Romney during this time frame (80 percent to 62 percent).  So the incumbent enjoyed increased and more positive coverage as voters finalized their decisions; his challenger was mentioned less, but when he was covered, those mentions were twice as likely to be negative than positive.  Whining about media bias is a useless enterprise for conservatives.  It's a fact of life that isn't going away any time soon.  Republican politicians should recognize this reality and plan accordingly.  But it's also preposterous for people to continue to claim that this bias doesn't exist.  Sure, improved polling and the Sandy photo-ops goosed Obama's numbers in the chart above, but that doesn't explain the sharp negative turn of the Romney coverage.  The media is generally populated by liberal Democrats who wanted Obama to win.  Whether it's deliberate or subconscious,  this mentality slants coverage.  The American people understand this more than ever -- which is why it's inaccurate to pin Romney's loss on slanted journalism.  It was a contributing factor, of course, but there were many bigger issues at play.  That said, a 2011 UCLA study has posited that media bias increases Democrats' popular vote total by eight to ten percentage points in any given election season.  That might sound extreme, but ask yourself this question:  If a Republican incumbent were facing roughly eight percent unemployment, and much higher "real" unemployment -- all while adding more than $5 trillion to the national debt and breaking virtually every major promise he'd made during his previous campaign, would this election have even been close?  Probably not.  He'd have long since been declared a failure, and the resulting coverage would have been a build-up to the coronation of his opponent.  Benghazi and its cover-up would have been a massive, eleventh-hour feeding frenzy; a final nail in the coffin.  But Democrats preside over a different media climate, so forward to four more year we go.

Bill O’Reilly Tears Into Romney Critics: ‘Gifts’ Remark ‘Is A Stone-Cold Fact’

On his show Monday night, Bill O’Reilly took on those criticizing Mitt Romney‘s remark about President Barack Obama winning the election based on the “gifts” he gave to key demographic groups. O’Reilly pointed to his own similar election night comments, and noted that there’s no reason for outrage because it’s simply the truth. 

Referring to Romney’s remark, made during a conference call with donors, O’Reilly said that’s basically what he himself said on election night. “It’s a changing country, the demographics are changing,” O’Reilly said that night. “It’s not a traditional America anymore, and there are 50 percent of the voting public who want stuff. They want things. And who is going to give them things? President Obama.” 

And he, too, was criticized. But “that’s the truth,” he said, mentioning that 63 percent of Americans making less than $30,000 a year voted for Obama. “It is a stone-cold fact.” Those on the left “don’t want to consider the fact that entitlements buy votes,” O’Reilly said. 

But they’re not alone. Romney’s been getting heat from those on the right side of the spectrum as well. O’Reilly particularly pointed to George Will and Newt Gingrich. Romney’s failure is clear, he added: He couldn’t convince majority of Americans that he would look out for them. And what did lower-income Americans vote for? It’s not more debt, Middle East chaos, eight percent unemployment or government regulations. No, O’Reilly said, they “voted for the candidate who they thought was going to directly helm them financially.” Not every Obama voter, he noted, but many.

In 59 Philadelphia Wards, Mitt Romney Did Not Get A Single Vote

Voter fraud and/or voter intimidation could only explain this:

It's one thing for a Democratic presidential candidate to dominate a Democratic city like Philadelphia, but check out this head-spinning figure: In 59 voting divisions in the city, Mitt Romney received not one vote. Zero. Zilch.

These are the kind of numbers that send Republicans into paroxysms of voter-fraud angst, but such results may not be so startling after all.

"We have always had these dense urban corridors that are extremely Democratic," said Jonathan Rodden, a political science professor at Stanford University. "It's kind of an urban fact, and you are looking at the extreme end of it in Philadelphia."

Takeaway From Last Night's Election: Glorious Night For Anti-God, White, Social Liberals

Still getting over the shock, but here's my takeway from last night's election results:

1) Huge win for white, social liberals. Their mascot, Barack Obama, gets another 4 four years to further their anti-God, immoral, abortion by any means, "civil rights" for people who choose to have sex with people of the same sex, "civil rights" for illegal immigrants, pro-union at any cost, pro-"climate change", pro-victimhood agenda.

2) When Obama won Nevada, a state suffering some of the worst unemployment and housing foreclosure rates in the nation, you just knew it was not going to be Mitt Romney's night.

3) Yes, Hurricane Sandy did have an effect on the election. To think, the week before the hurricane hit Romney was leading in most polls. Then Sandy came, killed many, destroyed homes, etc., and a nation came together, saw the clips on TV (including POTUS supposedly "leading the charge" to recovery) and a certain, severely obese governor of New Jersey (and supposed Romney advocate) empirically embracing Obama like he was the second coming of God--yeah, optics can be very influential.

4) Dick Morris and Karl Rove should never, ever, ever be allowed to predict anything when it comes to politics.

5) It's hard enough to beat an incumbent, but Romney did himself no favors by playing it safe in that 3rd debate. He had plenty of opportunity to look presidential and go after Obama on Libya. predator drones killing American citizens, Gitmo still being open, etc. But he didn't and that's incredulous when you consider how much momentum he gained after clearly winning the first debate.

6) I don't know the stats, but libertarians probably cost Romney some key votes. I know Ron Paul never endorsed him and Paul is the leader of that lot so I imagine that a lot of them stayed home.

7) The black liberal vote made a difference in North Carolina, but not Pennsylvania, the latter of which Romney needed badly. At least some blacks in North Carolina are capable of thinking for themselves.

8) Elizabeth Warren beat Scott Brown. Allen West might be out. Some gay, white chick won a Senate seat. "Same-sex" marriage won in Maine. Yeah, those are huge victories for the white, morally bankrupt, "progressive" lot and they're loving it.

9) The Christian-Right needs to get their shit together...and soon. Clearly, Barry's team ran a better ground game and considering all that they were up against (high unemployment, the after-effects of ObamaCare, etc.) for them to still win is frankly speaking...amazing.

10) More gridlock. With the GOP gaining more seats in the Senate, anyone expecting real "change" in DC anytime soon is in either serious denial or just stupid. But that could actually be good for conservatives come 2014 and even 2016 when God forbid, Joe Biden runs.

Wow, one of my hometown papers, in a decidedly blue state no doubt, does the right thing:

America’s heart, soul, brains and muscle — the middle- and working-class people who make this nation great — have been beset for too long by sapping economic decline.

So, too, New York breadwinners and families.

Paychecks are shrunken after more than a decade in which the workplace has asked more of wage earners and rewarded them less. The decline has knocked someone at the midpoint of the salary scale back to where he or she would have been in 1996.

Then, the subway fare, still paid by token, was $1.50, gasoline was $1.23 a gallon and the median rent for a stabilized apartment was $600 a month. Today, the base MetroCard subway fare is $2.25, gasoline is in the $3.90 range and the median stabilized rent is $1,050, with all the increases outpacing wage growth.

A crisis of long duration, the gap between purchasing power and the necessities of life widened after the 2008 meltdown revealed that the U.S. economy was built on toothpicks — and they snapped.

Nine million jobs evaporated. The typical American family saw $50,000 vanish from its net worth, and its median household income dropped by more than $87 a week. New Yorkers got off with a $54 weekly hit.
Our leaders owed us better than lower standards of living, and we must have better if the U.S. is to remain a beacon of prosperity where mothers and fathers can be confident of providing for their children and seeing them climb higher on the ladder.

Revival of the U.S. as a land of opportunity and upward mobility is the central challenge facing the next President. The question for Americans: Who is more likely to accomplish the mission — Barack Obama or Mitt Romney?

Four years ago, the Daily News endorsed Obama, seeing a historic figure whose intelligence, political skills and empathy with common folk positioned him to build on the small practical experience he would bring to the world’s toughest job. We valued Obama’s pledge to govern with bold pragmatism and bipartisanship.
The hopes of those days went unfulfilled.

Achingly slow job creation has left the U.S. with 4.3 million fewer positions than provided incomes to Americans in 2007. Half the new jobs have been part-time, lower-wage slots, a trend that has ruinously sped a hollowing of the middle class.

The official unemployment rate stands at 7.9%, marking only the second month below 8% after 43 months above that level. Worse, add people who are working part-time because they have no better choice and the rate leaps to almost 15%. Still worse, add 8 million people who have given up looking for employment and the number who are out of jobs or who are cobbling together hours to scrape by hits some 23 million people.

Only America’s social safety net, record deficits and the Federal Reserve’s unprecedented low-interest policies have kept the label Great Depression II on the shelf.

New Yorkers have fared no better. The state is alone among the 50 in suffering significantly rising unemployment over the last 12 months, with the rate now at 8.9%. The city’s pain index is 8.8%, and the five boroughs have been trading down in salaries.

To me in order for Mitt Romney to win a few things have to happen: 1) less enthusiasm for Obama now then in '08 leads to less voter turnout, esp. in the so-called battleground states, 2) Tea Party voters who helped lead the 2010 midterm revolution, need to be there for Mitt come Tuesday, 3) pragmatism, what with all of Obama's broken promises and the fact that we are worse off than we were 4 years ago, voters (not including brainwashed Obamabots who will vote for Obama come hell or high water) need to vote with their conscious as well as a love for their country and see that this country needs to be steered in a new direction.
