Newt Gingrich: Bill Clinton Still In Control

It's certainly a viable theme and that any Republican candidate for President in 2012 could run with, but Newt gets credit for putting it out there first:

For Newt Gingrich, it's like Bill Clinton never left.


The former House Speaker tells the conservative Human Events the second half of Obama's term has essentially become "the third term of the Clintons."


"I think it's fascinating," said Gingrich in the interview published Friday. "You're sort of seeing the beginning of the third term of the Clintons because the first two years of Obama was such a failure in popular acceptance."


Since overseeing massive midterm losses, the president has installed several former Clinton administration officials, including selecting Clinton commerce Secretary Bill Daley as his chief of staff and former Clinton economic guru Gene Sperling as director of the National Economic Council. Meanwhile, former Clinton domestic policy adviser Bruce Reed has become chief of staff to Vice President Joe Biden.


"It's almost a Chicago-machine musical game, and all of it represents an increase in power for Bill Clinton," said Gingrich.


Gingrich, who is thought to be a likely Republican presidential candidate, may just hope his comments needle members of the left wing of the Democratic Party, many of whom think Clinton, and now Obama, are governing too far toward the center.


"It must be fascinating to be one of those left-wing activist groups that spent so much time and energy beating Hillary Clinton because they didn't want to see this kind of administration," he said.

Keith Olbermann Out At MSNBC

This must have something to do with Comcast merging with NBC the other day. Either way, good riddance:

Keith Olbermann is leaving MSNBC, the "Countdown" host announced on his show Friday night.


The liberal commentator told viewers he had been informed "this was going to be the last edition" of his show, but offered no further details.


NBC/Universal confirmed the news in a statement Friday night.


"MSNBC and Keith Olbermann have ended their contract. The last broadcast
of "Countdown with Keith Olbermann" will be this evening. MSNBC thanks
Keith for his integral role in MSNBC's success and we wish him well in
his future endeavors."


Olbermann made the announcement in his typical deadpan style, evoking scenes from the film "Network" and thanking viewers for keeping him on the air for eight years.


"In the mundane world television goodbyes, reality is laughably uncooperative," Olbermann said before launching into a story about his exit from ESPN 13 years ago.


"As God as my witness, in the commercial break just before the emotional moment, the producer got into my earpiece and he said, 'um, can you cut it down to 15 seconds so we get in this tennis result from Stuttgart,'" he said, half-smiling, pausing for composure.


"So I'm grateful I have a little more time to sign off here. Regardless this is the last edition of 'Countdown.'"

Megyn Kelly And Alan Colmes Defend Michelle Obama From Right-Wing Criticism

Because FOX is just a 'political arm of the GOP' or so the loon mantra goes:

A wary and weary Alan Colmes stopped by America Live this afternoon to weigh in on (sigh) whether or not First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” fitness and health program is responsible for a rise in pedestrian deaths, essentially transforming quiet suburban streets into veritable death channels… and to act as a fashion critic.


Colmes opined that the recent rise in Barack Obama’s ratings to around 53 percent may have prompted Obama’s critics to zero in on the First Lady – and Obama’s young daughters – instead.


Host Megyn Kelly and Colmes also discussed whether President and Ms. Obama’s decision to wear red, often associated with communism, to dinner with Chinese Premier Hu Jintao was offensive or inappropriate. Kelly didn’t think so, and even began laughing when she mentioned criticism over Sasha Obama’s red pants. She also pointed out that Laura Bush and President George W. Bush chose to wear red when meeting Hu. Colmes, for one, thought Ms. Obama’s Alexander McQueen dress was, in a word, “kickin.’” And, besides, he pointed out, red signifies joy and luck in Chinese culture.

Judge Denies Bail For Abortion Practitioner Kermit Gosnell And Staff

Sadly, who knows how many other sadists like Kermit Gosnell are out there with doc licenses doing this sort of thing> then too one can't help but wonder how much of our gov't funds went to this guy:

Kermit Gosnell was arraigned without bail late Thursday afternoon after charged with eight counts of murder in the death of a woman from a botched abortion and seven babies purposefully born so they could be killed in infanticides shortly thereafter.


Gosnell several staffers were arrested overnight on Tuesday after a grand jury indicted them on multiple charges after officials raided his abortion business following the woman’s death and discovered a “shop of horrors” filled with bags of bodies and body parts of deceased unborn children and babies killed in infanticides.


Authorities searching the facility last year found bags and bottles holding aborted babies scattered around the building, jars containing babies’ severed feet lining a shelf, as well as filthy, unsanitary furniture and equipment.


Gosnell, who used a method of live birth abortion to birth babies and snap their spinal cords with scissors, was arraigned and held without bail and two of Gosnell’s unlicensed and untrained staff, Adrienne Moton and Lynda Williams, who allegedly assisted him in the gruesome killings at his Women’s Medical Society abortion business were also arraigned and held without bail.


The grand jury released a 261-page report which said the 69-year-old abortion practitioner and his staff killed hundreds of babies in this manner and killed at least two women and injured many more in failed abortions. Gosnell became known in Philadelphia and the Atlantic region as the guy women should go to if they wanted a late-term abortion illegal in most states.

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords Moved To Houston Hospital Rehab Center

This is what most matters now, but in the long run something needs to be done to prevent mentally handicapped people from possessing guns so this kind of incident never happens again:

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords on Friday left the Tucson hospital where she had been treated since being shot in the head January 8, traveling down streets lined with well-wishers before flying to the Houston, Texas, hospital where she will continue her recovery.


She arrived at Houston Hobby International Airport shortly after 1 p.m. local time and was flown in a helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where one of the surgeons who has treated her since the shooting will hand over care to a new team of doctors.


Although previous reports had indicated she would move directly to a rehabilitation facility affiliated with the hospital, she will instead be taken to the hospital's trauma center for evaluation and treatment, said Dr. Dong Kim, a neurosurgeon at the hospital.


"She's not quite ready for rehabilitation yet," he said, citing concerns about ongoing medical issues. He declined to elaborate.


The hospital said in a statement that she will be transferred to the rehabilitation facility, TIRR Memorial Hermann, when her health allows.

Barack Obama’s Conspicuous Silence on Guns

Funny how all the VIP's in the loon wing never seem to bring up Barry's two-year silence on guns either:

Gun control is a perilous issue for President Barack Obama (Exhibit A: his infamous statement in the 2008 campaign that working class voters “cling to guns”) so the push for new restrictions following the shootings in Tucson, Ariz., puts the president in an especially tricky political predicament.


Obama has supported most major gun and ammunition control initiatives during a decade and a half in public life, including renewing the expired ban on semiautomatic assault rifles. But while he has an unambiguously liberal record on guns, he talks about the issue using muted, nonconfrontational tones engineered to avoid alienating gun-friendly voters, a huge proportion of the electorate that has steadily drifted away from Obama.


That pattern has held true, and then some, in the wake of the assassination attempt against Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and the murder of six others earlier this month.


White House officials have remained noncommittal about an effort by liberals in the House and Senate to restrict access to the kind of high-capacity ammunition magazines that allowed suspect Jared Lee Loughner to inflict mass casualties in a matter of seconds using a single, legal handgun.


Gun control advocates say Obama, who often touts his willingness to defy prevailing political opinion in service of higher principle, has the moral responsibility to make some kind of statement on the issue — even if the bill has little chance of passing.


“If the president could address the issue in the State of the Union that would be really important,” says Paul Helmke, president of the Washington-based Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, a major gun control group.


“If he could announce his support for the high-capacity clip legislation, that would be the best thing. The next best thing would be for him to support a presidential commission to study gun violence,” adds Helmke, the former mayor of Ft. Wayne, Ind. “But he can’t stay silent. Either way, he’s just got to do something.”


Obama didn’t address the issue head-on during his much-heralded speech in Tucson last week. The closest he came was to say, “We cannot and will not be passive in the face of such violence. We should be willing to challenge old assumptions in order to lessen the prospects of violence in the future.”


New York Democratic Rep. Tim Bishop, one of 42 House members to co-sponsor a bill limiting clip sizes to ten rounds, said “it obviously would be helpful” if Obama offered more explicit support.


“We’re not even talking about gun control here, we’re talking about limiting these crazy high-capacity clips,” Bishop added. “I don’t see how any reasonable person can oppose what we’re trying to do here. These clips aren’t used for hunting, unless you are talking about taking out a seriously energetic deer.”

Michael Steele Sells Out GOP, Goes On Rachel Maddow Show

And he wants to go on Bill Maher, what an ass-clown:

Michael Steele’s departure from the chairmanship of the RNC may leave him with significantly less power among Republicans, but for the media, it means Steele is now free to speak unencumbered by the burden of his old responsibility. Tonight, this meant Steele was free to speak unencumbered to Rachel Maddow about his struggles within the party, what he thinks of the job he did, and all the other TV shows he would have done had he been allowed to as RNC chair.


“I have been dying to talk to you for so long,” an ecstatic Maddow told Steele, after summarizing the way she perceived his tenure. For the most part, he agreed with her assessment, pointing out that “literally within 30 days of me being on the job there were calls for my resignation,” much of it having to do with the fact that he was a “grassroots guy” and his style of fundraising did not go well with the establishment. He shared an anecdote of spending time campaigning in Harlem, which turned many members of the committee of to him, and later noted that he saw his administration as a successful one despite the RNC’s current debt. He also noted that he delegated much of the responsibility in state campaigns to the state committees, which upset national officials who “wanted to get on the plane, wanted to see their friends.”


Maddow’s strongest line of attack, by far, was on financial terms, where she noted the millions in debt would cripple the RNC through to 2012, but Steele continued to argue that the debt was balanced out by the electoral wins, and that, despite it all, his fundraising was “the most raised by a party out of power in a long time.” If that was true, Maddow responded, “Why did you lose?” Steele noted the politics, and did not argue that he was misunderstood. In fact, he noted, “I think people understood me very well; they just didn’t like it.”


Then talk turned to why Steele wouldn’t go on Maddow’s show while he was chairman, which Steele argued that, despite him being a fan– “I watch the show regularly!”– the party wouldn’t have it, despite him being chair. He also noted, somewhat surprisingly, that he had been hankering to do Real Time with Bill Maher, as well.

Kim Kardashian Blames 'Teen Mom' For Memphis Pregnancy Epidemic, Says It's ‘Disturbing'

Geez, if Kim Kardasian, not exactly a role model for morals and decency, gets it than why can't the rest of America get it and do something about MTV's longtime role in not only hyper-sexualizing our youth, but destroying America's moral framework:

Kim Kardashian is blaming MTV's popular Teen Mom reality television show for the teen pregnancy epidemic that has plagued a high school in Memphis, Tennessee.


The socialite took to Twitter on Wednesday and called the program “disturbing” and warned followers that teen pregnany should not be considered “trendy”.


"Does the show Teen Mom disturb anyone else?,” she wrote. “Can't get this Memphis story out of my head. This should NOT be
trendy!"


A teen pregnancy epidemic has plagued Frayser High School where ninety students are currently pregnant or have already had a baby this year, according to a report from WMC-TV 5 in Memphis.


According to Kim, the show that has turned Amber Portwood into a celebrity, encourages such behavior.


"I just couldn’t believe this and I find it so sad and disturbing," Kim wrote.


"It seems that shows like Teen Mom are all of a sudden making teen pregnancy seem cool in the eyes of young girls. The kids from these shows are all over the news, even on the covers of magazines, and have been become almost like celebrities, but girls, these are not people you should idolize!"


"When I think back to when I was 16, there is no way I would even have considered having a baby. That thought wouldn’t even have entered my head. Having a baby is one one of the biggest, and most life-changing decisions a person can make and while I’m not saying that no teen is in the position to raise a child, having a baby so young shouldn’t be seen as the trendy thing to do."


Kim even offered some sound advice for young teens who are sexually active and considering having children.


"Girls, please, think very carefully before you make these kind of decisions," Kim writes.

Anderson Cooper Takes On Democratic Steve Cohen Who Compared GOP “Lies” To Nazis

Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) recently stirred up a controversy when he inexplicably voiced his frustration with Republican opposition to health care reform by injecting Joseph Goebbels and Nazis into the conversation. Tonight, Cohen appeared on Anderson Cooper 360 to face up to, but not back down from, his remarks – remarks Cooper was clearly none too happy about.


Cooper – rightly, in our eyes – seemed mystified above all else by Cohen’s insistence on the Nazi talk: “I just don’t understand why you have to bring the Nazis into a discussion about health care and your opponents.” Amazingly, Cohen still didn’t seem to see what the fuss was about, even as Cooper pointed out the hypocrisy in making Nazi references when Cohen himself had just penned an op-ed in which he said things like, “Reckless and hateful speech often has a terrible human cost.”


And Cooper didn’t stop there, citing comments Cohen made last year in which he likened the anger of Tea Partiers to the KKK. He tried to justify these remarks by saying the Tea Party and KKK rose to prominence is similar circumstances, not unlike how he tried to compare Republican methods in telling “lies” to Goebbels’ strategy in Nazi Germany. Cooper tried to shoot the KKK comparison down by pointing out the Tea Party could just as easily be compared to “any populist movement.”


Cohen again tried to make himself look better by saying Politifact (not him) that named the idea of a “government takeover of health care” as the lie of 2010. Cooper continued banging his head against the wall trying to get Cohen to realize what he was doing, but Cohen simply concluded, “I won’t say it again, but I was right.”

House Votes To Repeal Health Care Law Against Long Odds

Appealing to their base....when Democrats do it it's smart politics, when the GOP does it it's "stupid" and a "waste of time":

The House of Representatives voted to repeal the Obama administration's signature health-care legislation Wednesday evening, a vote the newly elected Republican majority called a fulfillment of their No. 1 campaign promise.


The bill, dubbed the "Repealing the Job-Killing Health Care Law Act," passed 245-189. Three Democrats joined a unanimous Republican caucus on the vote.


The legislation is unlikely to make it past the Democratic-controlled Senate, where Majority Leader Harry Reid has said he won't bring it to the floor for a vote. And even if it did, it would face a certain veto by President Barack Obama. But Rep. Mike Pence, a leading GOP conservative, dismissed Democratic criticism that Wednesday's vote was a "gimmick."


"We have another term for it on our side of the aisle: It's a promise kept," he said. "And House Republicans are here to stand with the American people and say with one voice, 'We can do better.' We can do better than their government takeover of health care."


Republicans have not presented an alternative bill to replace the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, which passed in 2010 over their unanimous opposition. House Speaker John Boehner said Republicans will ask congressional committees to come up with "common-sense reforms" that will widen coverage while bringing down costs, but told reporters no "artificial deadlines" were needed.


Most Republicans have acknowledged the virtual impossibility of an outright repeal, but have said they will try to cut funding to portions of the measure or eliminate specific provisions in the months ahead.

MTV Continues To Promote Smut And Sleaze With New Show "Skins"

In a Girls Gone Wild culture somehow MTV doesn't get near the amount of credit for formenting this stuff as it deserves--blame the usual suspects in the lamestream media for enabling them:

MTV has bumped up the smut and sleaze level on television with its new show “Skins” – a take off on a successful BBC series. The scripted show’s attempt to portray the real lives of high school students showcases casual sex among minors without consequences, a 16 year-old child purchasing four ounces of marijuana, an adult woman stripping for an underage peeping tom, parental verbal abuse, an overdose on narcotics, and sexual assault of a minor – all in the series premiere.


Titled “Tony,” the episode’s plot revolves around a group of illegal drug-using, pill-popping, casual sex touting group of friends attempting to get virgin friend Stanley’s “cherry popped.” “Stan’s gotta get laid before he turns 17 or he’s not my friend anymore,” said the main character, Tony.


In a press release, MTV’s boasted about the premiere’s ratings, and its success among the 12-34 demographic, despite its TV-MA rating. On January 18, “Skins” drew the “network’s largest P12-34 audience for a series launch…and drew the most P12-34 viewers for a show launch in the network’s history. MTV’s newest scripted series drew 3.26 million total viewers and 2.7 million viewers in its core demo,” read the release.


The hour-long episode follows the teens’ wild quest to persuade formerly hospitalized mental-case Katie to have sex with Stanley. She agrees on the condition that he gets her some “good narcotics.” Viewers follow Stanley’s visit to a drug dealer’s home where, after selling him marijuana, the adult male drug dealer sexually assaults him. There are several shots of the teens smoking joints, participating in casual sex, and viewing pornography. The episode ends with an erratic, law-breaking drive to the hospital in a car the teens stole, in order to save Katie who has overdosed on mysterious pills before Stanley could have sex with her.


Sadly, this is MTV’s attempt to portray teenage “reality.” But in truth, lewd, illegal and dangerous behavior like the characters engage in would inevitably bring some of them diseases, pregnancy, jail time and even death.

Idiot Democrat Steve Cohen Is The New Alan Grayson, Compares GOP To Nazis

The newfound civility didn’t last long. Political rhetoric in Congress doesn’t get much nastier than the words of one House Democrat during the debate on repealing the health care law.


In an extraordinary outburst on the House floor, Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) invoked the Holocaust to attack Republicans on health care and compared rhetoric on the issue to the work of infamous Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels.


“They say it's a government takeover of health care, a big lie just like Goebbels," Cohen said. "You say it enough, you repeat the lie, you repeat the lie, and eventually, people believe it. Like blood libel. That's the same kind of thing. And Congressman Cohen didn’t stop there.


“The Germans said enough about the Jews and people believed it--believed it and you have the Holocaust. We heard on this floor, government takeover of health care. Politifact said the biggest lie of 2010 was a government takeover of health care because there is no government takeover," Cohen said.


Cohen made his comments late last night, but they have attracted no attention because his speech was made to a virtually empty House chamber with no reporters around to watch.

Speaking of Grayson, good to see he's still same a-hole he always was.

Joe Lieberman To Retire 2012

I didn't agree with all of his policies, but for a man who stood on principle (instead of ideology) and often had the courage to take on liberal terrorism while he was a Democrat, Senator Lieberman will always have my respect:

Sen. Joe Lieberman, the independent from Connecticut, is planning to announce Wednesday that he will not seek re-election, according to two knowledgeable Democratic sources.


The move by the former Democratic vice presidential candidate could add even more murkiness to the party's hopes of hanging on to its slim majority in the Senate in the 2012 election, especially coming on the heels of Sen. Kent Conrad's, D-North Dakota, that he will not seek re-election at the end of this term.


North Dakota's other Senate seat fell into Republican hands in the midterm election after Democratic Sen. Byron Dorgan announced his retirement. Rep. Earl Pomeroy, Democrat-North Dakota, meanwhile, lost the state's only at-large House seat in November, so Conrad's seat will be in major jeopardy.


While Lieberman is an independent he has aligned himself with the Democratic leadership for organizational purposes, helping to boost the Democratic majority on issues like health reform. But he has also frustrated party leaders on other big issues, leading one Democratic source to say privately that it's a "sigh of relief" for Democrats if Lieberman does step aside because the party would have a chance to elect someone who sides with them more often.


The race for his seat is wide open. Earlier on Tuesday former Connecticut secretary of state Susan Bysiewicz announced that she is planning to get into the 2012 Democratic primary for Lieberman's seat regardless of what the incumbent does. Reps. Chris Murphy and Joe Courtney are also considering Senate bids, while various Republicans are mulling their options.


A Lieberman aide stressed that the Senator made his own decision some time ago and it was not influenced by Bysiewicz's announcement Tuesday or any other maneuvering.

Sarah Palin Tells Liberals That She's "Not Going To Shut Up"

Unlike this biased idiot's review over at Mediaite, I thought Palin's response to all the smears and blame-game theatrics going on courtesy of the Left over the past week or so was on-point and well-spoken:

Last night Sarah Palin appeared on Fox News with Sean Hannity, and although some feel all she did was preach to the choir, she actually accomplished a whole lot more with this passionate and, dare I say, courageous appearance. Not only did she rally her conservative troops, but she also laid the foundation for her continued relevance as a national figure while also skillfully establishing why she believed the mainstream media, and liberals in general, despise her. Simply put, she’s the most effective messenger for conservative principles and she will not be silenced.


Despite calling the Arizona shooter “evil” and praying for the families impacted by the tragedy, critics continue to think Palin focused too much on herself as the victim. Yet remember Palin was the one dragged into this conversation, by no choice of her own, with allegations implying she and others somehow contributed to the murders. Therefore, why shouldn’t anyone in her position be entitled to every opportunity to defend themselves against such vitriolic smears?


Palin claimed her controversial video response to the tragedy “wasn’t self-defense, it was defending those who were falsely accused,” which also included other conservative commentators and members of the Tea Party. This eagerness to fight for unrestrained freedom of speech for all and her refusal to apologize for using the term “blood libel” are early signs of Palin’s leadership capabilities and her confidence to never back down, even when under intense fire from the media.


Palin’s tenacity in part derives from her rational understanding of why she is so frequently targeted:


“I know that it isn’t about me personally, but it is about the message, that I am not hesitant at all to spread across this country, and that is that our country is on the wrong track. We’ve got to get it back on the right track . . . to allow us to be prosperous and healthy and safe again. . . . Those on the left hate my message, and they’ll do all that they can to stop me.”


Her message, more specifically hinted at during this appearance, is a growing concern over the debt, the looming energy crisis, and various national security policies.


No matter one’s political beliefs though, it’s hard to dispute that Palin displays a fierce determination in the face of substantial adversity with her promise that “I’m not going to sit down, I’m not going to shut up” about issues in which she believes and with an admirable willingness to “take the darts and the arrows” she receives from all critics while continuing to speak. And when her most significant issue is ensuring that “peaceful dissent and discussion about ideas [is not] stifled by a tragic event,” Palin’s efforts toward this goal should surely be welcomed by all.


Before this interview, some considered Palin at the end of her political career, puke-worthy or not well-educated, while many conservative voices refrained from publicly defending Palin or even suggested dismissing her as radioactive or overly scripted. Did all of these commentators and politicians make inaccurate assessments or premature predictions more reflective of conventional wisdom or their own wishful thinking, rather than based on what now seems to be Palin’s realistic political future? “You betcha!”

Michael Reagan on Ron’s Alzheimer Claims: Let’s Face It, He’s An Embarrassment

An obligatory follow-up to Friday’s post, with Michael openly wondering whether Ron might have ended up pulling the lever for Mondale in 1984. One thing I neglected to mention on Friday: Isn’t it an unfortunate tradition for presidents to continue in office long after their health has become a major liability? For all the obsession about Reagan’s occasional memory lapses, you’d never know that arguably the two most influential Democratic chief execs of the 20th century were both heavily burdened by illness in their last years in office. Wilson had a catastrophic stroke in 1919, a year and a half before his second term expired, and FDR was already so frail by the time of the 1944 election that Democrats booted Henry Wallace from the ticket in favor of Truman precisely because they feared the VP would end up as president relatively soon. Reagan’s problems were comparatively minor until a few years after he left office, but as Michael says, pretending he was already lost in the fog of Alzheimer’s is a useful way to deny him credit for his achievements. And of course, it turns Reagan into a vividly literal example of the stereotypical Republican who’s “out of touch with reality.”


But there’s no use fighting this rumor; it’s been around forever and will go on forever, precisely because it serves political ends, however cheaply. In fact, I remember as a kid my parents talking about it while Reagan was in his second term, with the claim at the time being that Nancy, as her husband’s caretaker, was effectively running the country. Quoth my dad, “She’s doing an awfully good job.”

Glenn Beck: I Have 15 Threats Against Me At Any Given Time

Glenn Beck has about 15 threats against his life being investigated at any one time, the popular TV and radio host told Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly.


In a wide-ranging discussion about the allegations of violent rhetoric that have been lobbed against conservatives in the wake of the Gabrielle Giffords assassination attempt in Tucson, Beck told O’Reilly he’s constantly dealing with threats because of his political views.


“The only thing that could be worse would be actual violence,” Beck said. “I don’t know about you, but I have about 15 operating threats on me at any one time.”


O’Reilly replied, “You have security and so do I.”


Beck also revealed that he has formulated a pledge against violence that so far has been agreed to by 17 members of Congress, though he did not know if they were all Republicans.


“Americans are fair and decent and they’re not looking for revenge or anything else,” Beck said, referring to the allegations against Sarah Palin and others. “They just wanted the record set straight. I think the record had been set straight but the damage had already been done.:

Dick Cheney Says He Still Sees Obama As One-Termer

At this point Barry's only a one-termer if the economy doesn't get back in shape and if he faces off against Mike Huckabee--the only person with a chance to beat him in 2012:

In his first television interview since he underwent heart surgery last summer, former Vice President Dick Cheney says rebounding poll figures haven’t changed his mind on President Obama. In the interview, set to air Tuesday morning on TODAY, Cheney tells NBC News national correspondent Jamie Gangel “I think he’s enacted a program that a great many people are very worried about.”


Cheney, who talks about his recent surgery and weight loss, said he believes the president has “learned a lot” since he entered office, but not enough to earn him a second term:


I think his overall approach to expanding the size of government, expanding the deficit, and giving more and more authority and power to the government over the private sector is a lack of– sort of a feel for the role of the private sector in– in creating jobs, in creating wealth and getting our economy back on track. Those are all weaknesses, as I look at Barack Obama. And I think he’ll be a one term President.

Whatever else anyone thinks of Chris Christie, one cannot accuse him of backing away from a fight. In his effort to restore excellence to public education, Christie wants to eliminate tenure for teachers, proposing instead five-year contracts with performance reviews determining whether an instructor gets an offer of renewal. New Jersey cannot ensure quality instruction, Christie argues, when teachers get jobs “for life” after the first three years they spend with a school, and the only way to ensure excellence is to enforce accountability for performance:





The teachers union rep claims that teachers earn this lifetime protection with the first three years of their performance, but that’s ridiculous. In no other industry do workers lay claim to entitlement of employment by performing well only over the first three years. In fact, even with civil service protections, not even other public-sector workers get that kind of protection. Merely reducing the time for dismissal hearings involving tenured teachers won’t solve the problem, either, as the union suggests.


If teachers want to keep tenure at public schools, then those states should create voucher systems for parents to enforce accountability through their feet. One way or another, our children deserve effective and accountable education, and the vast majority of teachers who perform their jobs well deserve to have their own performance validated on its own rather than having to join the incompetent behind the skirts of tenure. Five-year contracts are more than sufficient to protect teachers while giving their employers a chance to evaluate whether continued employment is warranted.
