John Stossel Whines About Michael Jackson Coverage....Where Was He On Media's Princess Diana Obsession?

I've always been a fan of John Stossel's reporting and writings--he's long been a truth-seeker whose always shown to be one of the few in the leftist media unafraid to take on the slime of liberal propaganda. But joining the growing ranks of conservatives bitching about the news coverage of a global icon, just makes Stossel look dumb in my book:

Of course, maybe my bosses made the wrong choice. Maybe more viewers would have tuned in for my health care report. But the beauty of the market is that if they regularly choose wrong, they will go bankrupt. Networks better at giving the public what we want will take their business. I’d rather have viewers vote with their remotes than have elites govern our choices, making sure we watch “serious” programming.

Yes, I am sick of the coverage of Michael Jackson. I hate it that ABC didn’t run my piece. Free markets sometimes encourage pandering to the masses. I still say, bless the market. The good outweighs the bad.

Free speech means rude obscenity and hate speech. I treasure free speech too.

It just irks me that conservatives are acting like Michael Jackson planned his death ahead of time so as to interfere with their ability to get news. Then too treating a guy, whose death almost literally killed the internet, like he was just your average, run-of-the-mill "pop star" just hints of racism, esp. when you consider the media's over-the-top obsession with Princess Diana's death that went on for weeks on end.

I normally agree with John Stossel's opinions on societal aspects of culture and politics, but I disagree with his take on prostitution being a "victimless crime". Prostitution not only degrades women, it destroys families, it's immoral, it speaks to the poverty crisis in our country, it lowers self-esteem, it confuses young women's take on power, control and their bodies, it's addictive, it opens the doors to other vices such as drug abuse and drug trafficking and lastly as seen in the case of the DC Madam, it can dehumanize you to the point of depression, or even worse, suicide:

The madam, Deborah Jeane Palfrey, was recently convicted on federal charges stemming from operating a prostitution service in the Washington, D.C. area with a number of high-profile clients. She was scheduled to be sentenced July 24.

Palfrey told ABC News last year she would never return to prison, after serving time in the 1990s for other prostitution-related charges. "I sure as heck am not going to be going to federal prison for one day, let alone, you know, four to eight years."

Palfrey's 76-year-old mother, Blanche, found her daughter's body in a shed to the side of her home, according to police. Palfrey had hung herself with nylon rope from a beam in the shed's ceiling, the police said.
